$8K Grant from Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas and Planters Bank Offers Cooling Relief to Mississippi Homeowner

Grant Covered Cost of New Air Conditioning Unit

DODDSVILLE, Miss.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Doddsville, Mississippi, resident Stella Groves has endured many Mississippi summers, but this one would have been unbearable due to a broken air conditioning system. However, a more than $8,000 Special Needs Assistance Program (SNAP) grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas (FHLB Dallas) through member Planters Bank provided cooling relief in the form of a new air conditioning system.

Through FHLB Dallas member institutions, SNAP grants provide funding for the repair and rehabilitation of owner-occupied housing of eligible, special-needs individuals such as the elderly and disabled. FHLB Dallas set aside $2 million of its 2024 Affordable Housing Program funds for SNAP.

Ms. Groves has lived in her current home for 27 years. The air conditioning was not the only item that needed attention, but it was one of the most pressing ones.

“I’m having problems with the water, floor and windows. But thanks to the SNAP grant, I have one less problem to deal with; it can get pretty hot out here and I’m relieved to have a new air conditioning unit,” Ms. Groves said.

Planters Bank has used SNAP grants to improve the welfare of some of the most vulnerable in the community.

“Ensuring residents can stay cool during the sweltering summer goes beyond just comfort — it’s about dignity and well-being,” said Planters Bank CRA Officer Paula Gagnier. “We are honored to play a part in ensuring that Ms. Groves and other senior residents from our community can live safely and comfortably in their homes.”

SNAP helps preserve housing affordability in communities with limited resources, said Greg Hettrick, senior vice president and director of Community Investment at FHLB Dallas.

“We’re glad to have partners across our communities who ensure that no one slips through the cracks,” he said.
