The MolinaCares Accord Provides Santee Sioux Nation $50,000 to Assist Members Following Tribal State of Emergency

NIOBRARA, Neb.--()--The Molina Cares Accord (“MolinaCares”), in collaboration with Molina Healthcare of Nebraska (“Molina”), provided a grant to support the Santee Sioux Nation’s efforts to provide food and heat in the wake of a winter storm. The $50,000 donation will help purchase propane and food, both of which are not readily accessible on the reservation when storms hit.

In January, the Santee Sioux Nation declared a Tribal State of Emergency. Its isolated land has only one grocery store that is unable to keep sufficient inventory to feed the 225 households if food providers can’t deliver products after a storm. Additionally, the reservation’s regular propane provider says delivery of its product during and after inclement weather can be difficult and sometimes impossible. The MolinaCares grant will help build a reserve of resources when the next winter storm arrives.

“We are proud to support the Santee Sioux Nation by helping to supply necessities for its members,” said Frank Clepper, plan president for Molina Healthcare of Nebraska. “Molina is excited to serve Nebraskans with high-quality health care and connect underserved populations to the resources they need to improve health outcomes.”

The MolinaCares donation was made just a few weeks after Molina Healthcare of Nebraska began serving Medicaid enrollees through the state’s Heritage Health program.
