AM Best Affirms Credit Ratings of First Guard Insurance Company

OLDWICK, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AM Best has affirmed the Financial Strength Rating of A (Excellent) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating of “a+” (Excellent) of First Guard Insurance Company (First Guard) (Scottsdale, AZ). The outlook of these Credit Ratings (ratings) is stable. First Guard is a subsidiary of Biglari Holdings Inc. [NYSE: BH].

The ratings reflect First Guard’s balance sheet strength, which AM Best assesses as very strong, as well as its strong operating performance, neutral business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management (ERM).

The stable outlooks reflect AM Best’s expectation that the group will maintain its very strong overall balance sheet strength assessment, supported by risk-adjusted capitalization at the strongest level, as measured by Best’s Capital Adequacy Ratio (BCAR). Despite an extraordinary dividend to its parent in 2022, key balance sheet metrics remain supportive of the current assessment. First Guard’s balance sheet strength assessment further recognizes its low underwriting and investment leverage, as well as consistently favorable loss reserve development. First Guard’s strong operating performance assessment reflects key metrics that consistently outperform composite benchmarks and regularly drives surplus growth. While the product line is narrow, the company’s extensive expertise in the trucking physical damage market segment and a strong experienced management team has a long history of success. First Guard’s ERM process is rooted in active risk identification and ongoing refinement of mitigation strategies with involvement from various levels within the company.
