Dr. Carey Wright Joins DreamBox Learning® Board of Directors

Renowned state superintendent and educational equity advocate brings decades of leadership experience accelerating student learning to bolster DreamBox growth

BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--DreamBox Learning, Inc. (“DreamBox”), the only provider of solutions rated “Strong” by Johns Hopkins’ EvidenceforESSA.org in both mathematics and reading and pioneer of intelligent adaptive learning, today announced Dr. Carey Wright, the former state superintendent of education for Mississippi and one of the most recognized and renowned state education chiefs of the 21st century, has joined its board of directors. In 2019, Dr. Wright was one of seven education leaders appointed by U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos to serve on the National Assessment Governing Board.

During her tenure as state superintendent of education for Mississippi from 2013 to 2022, Mississippi schools experienced more student gains than any state superintendent of education since the Education Reform Act of 1982 established the Mississippi State Board of Education. A passionate advocate for educational equity, Dr. Wright’s creation of the “Mississippi Connects” program, which provides every teacher and student in Mississippi with a computer device to teach or learn at school or from home, has been key to Mississippi students’ learning achievement and closing the digital divide.

"Dr. Wright is one of the most recognized and celebrated education leaders of our time. Her impressive track record as a state superintendent, chief academic officer, and educational equity advocate means she understands the need for proven solutions that work,” said Jessie Woolley-Wilson, CEO and President of DreamBox Learning. “We are thrilled that Dr. Wright has joined our board, as she will help DreamBox continue to amplify the impact of our effective, engaging, and easy-to-use mathematics and reading solutions to more district leaders and ensure that every student gets the opportunity to learn with DreamBox.”

As state superintendent of education for Mississippi, Dr. Wright led Mississippi 4th graders, who were reading more than one full grade level behind the national average on the NAEP in 2013, to tie the nation in reading, score higher than the nation’s public-school average in mathematics, and rank No. 1 in the nation for making the largest score gains in 2019. The rapid progress of Mississippi students earned the state Quality Counts’ No. 2 ranking in the nation for improvement in 2019, 2020, and 2021. Further, Mississippi’s ranking climbed from 50th to 35th, and the graduation rate rose from 75.5% to 88.4% – higher than the national average.

Prior to her appointment as state superintendent for Mississippi, Dr. Wright served as chief academic officer and the deputy chief for the Office of Teaching and Learning for the District of Columbia Public Schools and as a consultant to the Harvard Business School Public Education Leadership Project. Dr. Wright is a board member of EdReports and the National Center for the Improvement of Educational Assessment. She is also the past president of the board of directors for the Council of Chief State School Officers, a former Chiefs for Change executive board member, and an alumnus of the Broad Academy. In 2022, Dr. Wright earned the “Mississippi Top 50 Most Influential Leaders” award.

“I’ve seen firsthand the power of DreamBox’s adaptive, personalized learning solutions in classrooms across the state of Mississippi,” said Dr. Wright. “I’m a true believer that DreamBox can engage, inspire, and empower students and teachers nationwide to make significant and necessary academic gains in mathematics and reading, critical to closing achievement gaps and instilling a love of learning for all students.”

Dr. Wright is the second board member to join DreamBox’s board of directors this year. Candice Faktor, co-CEO and co-founder of Disco, also joined the board to help DreamBox scale its highly efficacious reading and mathematics solutions, robust data and analytics, and job-embedded professional development programming to more school districts nationwide.
