Online training essential to closing the skills gap

New report shows how online training with assessments can equip the economy with crucial modern skills

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Online learning can combat the “great resignation” and close the skills gap, according to a new report from Questionmark, the online assessment provider.

Some 20 million United States (US) workers quit their jobs in the latter half of 2021. This created problems for firms that have struggled to replace them. However, according to the Questionmark report “Solving the Modern Skills Shortage in 2022”, employers can boost engagement and retention among their staff by offering more training and greater career development opportunities.

While online training was often introduced as a “quick fix” at the height of the pandemic, it is now essential to an effective development strategy. Firms are increasingly adopting hybrid working arrangements whereby employees spend more time working from home. The online learning experience needs to be as effective as possible to maximize engagement with learning and give people the skills they need to develop their careers.

Neil McGough, General Manager of Questionmark said: “Online learning is most effective when it is regularly assessed with quizzes, tests and exams. Frequent assessments help give learning a better structure, creating short-term goals to work toward. When training and education take place remotely, it can be harder to gauge whether people are keeping up. Short tests show whether or not learners are making progress. When people are struggling, course leaders can introduce extra support.”

The Questionmark platform enables learning program leaders to assess an unlimited number of people from anywhere in the world. It is easy to create and adapt assessments. The platform instantly compiles results making trends and patterns easy to spot. When the stakes are high, the platform provides proctoring or invigilation options to guard against cheating.
