Medical Mutual Medicare Advantage PPO Plans Achieve CMS’ Highest Rating

Health insurer’s HMO line awarded 4.5 Stars

CLEVELAND--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Medical Mutual’s preferred provider organization (PPO) line of Medicare Advantage Plans achieved the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) top rating, 5 out of 5 Stars, for 2022. In addition, the company’s health maintenance organization (HMO) options were awarded 4.5 out of 5 Stars.

Medical Mutual entered the Medicare Advantage market in 2016, earning the highest enrollment of any new plan that year. Now, the company is one of only nine plans in the United States that achieved CMS’ highest rating in its first five years.

The 5-Star rating allows individuals to switch to a Medical Mutual PPO plan anytime throughout the year. Lower-rated plans can only accept enrollment during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period, which runs Oct. 15 through Dec. 7.

CMS rates plans from 1 to 5 Stars, with 5 representing excellent performance. Insurers are evaluated on what they do to keep members healthy including preventive screenings and vaccines, how well they help members manage chronic conditions like heart disease and diabetes, how responsive the plan is to making sure members get the care they need, helping resolve member complaints, and customer service.

In addition, because Medical Mutual’s Medicare Advantage plans come with a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan, Medical Mutual was also evaluated on members’ overall satisfaction with the drug plan, drug pricing and patient safety.

“Our excellent ratings highlight Medical Mutual’s commitment to keeping our members healthy through prevention and the management of chronic conditions,” said Teresa Koenig, MD, MBA, Medical Mutual Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. “The achievement also reflects our dedication to providing excellent customer service and making member experience a top priority.”

“This exceptional achievement reaffirms the high quality of care and service we offer our members,” said Rick Chiricosta, Chairman, President & CEO. “This accomplishment, especially in the midst of the pandemic, belongs to all of our employees. The commitment and dedication of our teams, whether working directly with members or behind the scenes, sets us apart from our competitors. I know we will continue to exceed members’ expectations.”
