BioTek reMEDys Hosts Inspirational Talk by Legendary Retired Judge Nelson Diaz

First Latino Judge in Pennsylvania Shares Insights on Leadership and Making a Difference with Compassion-Driven Specialty Infusion Pharmacy Services Team

NEW CASTLE, Del.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--BioTek reMEDys, one of the nation’s largest specialty infusion pharmacies focused on rare diseases, hosted a special motivational event for its employees this week, featuring a rousing presentation and book-signing by former Pennsylvania Judge Nelson Díaz.

Díaz is currently an attorney at Dilworth Paxson. He was the first Latino judge in Pennsylvania, serving on the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas. Nationally recognized as a Hispanic Leader for integrity, advocacy and credibility, Rosie Greer and Keith Harrel have written about the leadership qualities of the former judge both in the corporate and non-profit arenas. His autobiographical book Not From Here, Not from There / No Soy de Aqui ni de Alla tells the struggles of Puerto Rican migration.

Díaz's parents emigrated from Puerto Rico to New York before he was born. His family lived in public housing in West Harlem. Díaz has shared that his upbringing was difficult and that he was often left alone "in a building overstuffed with people living in squalor." As a teenager, he performed poorly in school, joined a gang, and looked up to local gang leaders as heroes.

He credits his mother and his faith for turning his life around and setting him on the path to a successful academic career at St. John's University and ultimately to law school where he became the first Puerto Rican to graduate from Temple University Beasley School of Law.

Since graduating from law school, Díaz has been a trailblazer in his career, becoming the first Latino to hold a number of positions. In 1981, he became the first Latino judge in Pennsylvania history, as well as the youngest judge in Philadelphia history, when he was elected to the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas at the age of 34. Díaz served on the Court until 1993, when President Bill Clinton appointed him General Counsel of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Throughout his career, Díaz has been known as a champion for civil rights, court reform, fair housing, and bilingual education.

Díaz spoke to the BioTek reMEDys team about his book and shared stories offering powerful lessons on finding a place in the world by creating spaces where everyone is welcome.

Díaz also offered advice to people who are experiencing discrimination. "Despite the discrimination that one suffers...I think you must hold your head up high and focus on how you can contribute. Don't let those things be stumbling blocks along your journey," he said.
