Psychology Month: This February let’s bring awareness to mental health and the people that help us get through it all.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia--()--Mental health is something to take seriously, and thankfully in the modern era recognition of our mental health is something that is improving every day. 2020 was a difficult year, between social isolation, illness, and financial strain. A lot of people were under stress, and psychologists were needed more than ever to help people get through their difficult times.

February is Psychology Month, during which we raise awareness about the role psychology plays in our everyday lives and the benefits of using psychologists to help overcome obstacles. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, 1 in 5 Canadians will face issues with their mental health in their lifetime. The British Columbia Psychological Association (BCPA) wants British Columbians to know that psychologists are highly trained experts that are here to help.

Psychologists are trained in understanding how we behave, think and feel. They are a regulated body of professionals that can help people through their personal, interrelationship, and professional problems. Due to historical stigma around mental health, people may still be hesitant to speak to a psychologist. In fact, a survey conducted by Nanos in collaboration with the Canadian Psychological Association and the Council of Professional Associations of Psychologists in September of 2020 found that 42% of British Columbians consider stigma to be a barrier to accessing psychological services. But the truth is, we can all use a helping hand sometimes, and we should use the resources available to us.

Throughout February the BCPA is running a series of incredible workshops and talks to help educate people about psychology and the benefits of working with a psychologist. This workshop series includes FREE talks on:

  • Anxiety
  • Loneliness
  • COVID and its impact on mental health
  • Work-life balance
  • Relationships
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Trauma

This limited free series will be running throughout February 2021, and you can register to listen in on their Events Page.

The BCPA offers a province-wide free psychologist referral service. British Columbians can search for a Registered Psychologist that suits their needs by visiting https://www.psychologists.bc.ca/find_psychologist or by calling 604-730-0522 or 1-800-730-0522.
