Health tech startup, Saykara, wins Stratus Award for cloud computing, practical innovations in artificial intelligence

Saykara has been honored for cloud computing achievements in the category of artificial intelligence (AI).

Saykara has won a Stratus Award for its artificially intelligent (AI) voice assistant, named Kara, that automates clinical charting. “With Kara, physicians no longer carry the burden of clinical charting into the exam room or home at night. They’re able to give patients their undivided attention, forge trusting relationships and deliver high-quality, collaborative care -- all while regaining work-life balance,” says Dr. Graham Hughes, the company’s president and chief medical officer. SEATTLE--()--Saykara is pleased to announce it has received a 2020 Stratus Award in recognition of successfully developing and deploying the first artificially intelligent (AI) voice assistant to automate clinical charting. The company harnesses the power of cloud computing, deep machine learning and long-form natural language understanding to generate notes, orders, referrals and more by ambiently listening to conversations between physicians and patients.

Named Kara, the AI voice assistant extracts meaning and intent from what it hears, then populates both structured and narrative data to the electronic health record (EHR). Kara is accessible via a mobile app and available for use anytime, anywhere.

“One of the most significant issues facing our nation’s healthcare system is the fact physicians spend more time on documentation and administrative work than they do on patient care, which has placed an incredible strain on productivity and contributed to extraordinary levels of dissatisfaction and burnout,” says Dr. Graham Hughes, president and chief medical officer of Saykara. “With Kara, physicians no longer carry the burden of clinical charting into the exam room or home at night. They’re able to give patients their undivided attention, forge trusting relationships and deliver high-quality, collaborative care -- all while regaining work-life balance.”

Stratus Award nominations are judged by a panel of experienced business executives across multiple domains. Winners are honored for “unique solutions that take advantage of cloud technologies” and “authentic talent and superior performance in the business world.”

“Although voice assistants like Alexa and Siri are very helpful in our everyday lives and can handle tasks ranging from playing music to finding recipes, they are predicated on listening and responding to individual questions or commands that are simply stated and narrow in scope,” Hughes explains. “Kara, on the other hand, is listening and responding to conversations between physicians and patients that are complex, varied and multi-faceted. This is both difficult and challenging from a technology perspective, and given we are dealing with the medical field, it is absolutely essential our results be accurate.”

Saykara’s customers include independent physician practices as well as hospitals, health systems, ambulatory surgery centers and urgent care centers throughout the country.

About Saykara
Saykara has developed a platform that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to interpret conversations between physicians and patients, transform salient content into clinical notes, orders, referrals and more, then populate both structured and narrative data directly to electronic health record systems. This is accomplished through a voice-enabled assistant named Kara that physicians access via a mobile app. The platform is specialty agnostic, scalable across any size enterprise and available with a software-as-a-service (SaaS) subscription. It has been proven to completely eliminate after-hours charting, reduce overall time spent charting by up to 70%, and enhance documentation quality and completeness by an average of 20%. Plus, with no need for computer data entry during visits, it gives physicians more face time with their patients and fosters more personalized interactions.
