Psychiatric Times Tackles Racism in Psychiatry

Leaders in mental health care will examine the history and current state of racism in psychiatry, and a corresponding live webinar will delve further into identifying specific issues and addressing inequities

CRANBURY, N.J.--()--Psychiatric Times, a multimedia platform that features content by and for mental health care physicians and professionals, will publish a special feature article, “Dismantle Racism,” in its August issue and will also host a corresponding live webinar on Aug. 20.

“Now more than ever, dialogue regarding the continued fight for racial equality is at the forefront of the nationwide social justice movement,” said Mike Hennessy Jr., president and CEO of MJH Life Sciences™, parent company of Psychiatric Times. “This powerful content presents an array of perspectives and, more importantly, a greater call to action for clinicians to identify and contribute to the demolition of discrimination present in health care.”

Psychiatric Times invited editorial board member, award-winning author and psychiatrist H. Steven Moffic, M.D., to explore recent events and the importance of addressing racial prejudice in psychiatry. Moffic, who specializes in the cultural and ethical aspects of psychiatry, invited six other psychiatrists who share the same passion for addressing racism in psychiatry and society to collaborate on this project. Featured throughout the article are Rahn K. Bailey, M.D., Frank A. Clark, M.D., Claire Cohen, M.D., Catherine Friedman, M.D., Jessica Isom, M.D., M.P.H., and Aekta Malhotra, M.D.

Representing a variety of racial backgrounds, Moffic and the co-authors offer a diverse spectrum of professional experiences as they explore 10 aspects of racism, including the historical influence of racism in psychiatry, lack of diversity in psychiatric leadership, the ethical duty of physicians to address racism, criminal reform, the impact of racism in children and the need for continuing education on the topics of racism.

“Psychiatric Times is proud to present this thoughtful piece on racism in psychiatry and society. This diverse team challenges us all to recognize and resolve the blatant and subtle ways racism impacts health care and health outcomes,” said Heidi Anne Duerr, M.P.H., associate editorial director of Psychiatric Times. “Just as psychiatrists are in the ideal position to find and confront racism as it insidiously weaves its way in our society, Psychiatric Times is uniquely situated to address the issues facing psychiatrists and the field today.”

On Aug. 20 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. EDT, Psychiatric Times will also host the live webinar, “Dismantling Racism in Medicine, Psychiatry and Society.” The webinar will include the authors, Seven Psychiatrists Against Racism (SPAR), who will deep dive further into the issues and examine what can be done to address the inequities in our country.
