Carnegie Learning Launches LiveHint™, an Innovative Assistant that Supports Student Learning at Home, in Response to COVID-19 School Closures

LiveHint is a first of its kind product that allows students to obtain hints on textbook problems through a conversational chatbot that will integrate with Alexa and Google Home

PITTSBURGH--()--Carnegie Learning announced today that it has developed a brand-new app to help teachers facilitate independent learning and assist students and parents who need additional support while learning at home. LiveHint, with support from Schmidt Futures, a philanthropic initiative co-founded by Eric and Wendy Schmidt, gives middle and high school students the opportunity to ask for hints while working through problems in the Carnegie Learning textbook. It was developed in record time in response to the COVID-19 crisis, but will also be a valuable tool for homework help and individual study in breakout groups when students go back to school.

From the industry leader in cognitive tutoring and award-winning innovator of artificial intelligence applications for education, LiveHint represents a complete re-thinking of the student textbook experience. Students can now receive real-time hints as they work through the Carnegie Learning materials, which received near-perfect scores from EdReports.org. The app works on any mobile phone, Chromebook, or web browser and will soon be available for Google Home and Alexa so students can simply ask a question and receive instant verbal prompts and hints.

LiveHint is the perfect solution for at-home learning, giving students and parents the support they need when students can’t be with their teacher while also providing invaluable data to teachers about where students are struggling. LiveHint also encourages student engagement in mathematics by meeting students where they are, using chat, video, audio and emojis. In addition, the data from LiveHint will be continuously evaluated by Carnegie Learning data scientists, who can use it to better understand how students engage with the instructional materials in order to continuously improve them.

“At Carnegie Learning, we are committed to supporting teachers, students and parents through this challenging time and doing whatever we can to minimize learning loss and prevent students from falling off the ‘COVID cliff,’” says Barry Malkin, CEO. “We developed LiveHint as quickly as possible to make sure students don’t struggle through the content alone while schools are closed. LiveHint will also significantly lighten the load for parents by coaching students through the mathematics, right there at the exact moment students have a question.”
