A New NSTA Book Shows How Students Can Take on Engineering Design Challenges Inspired by a Broad Range of Literature

ARLINGTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A new resource from NSTA Press shows how students can use novels, biographies, histories, and even picture books to identify a problem that they then solve using an engineering design process. Novel Engineering, K–8: An Integrated Approach to Engineering and Literacy introduces students to an innovative curriculum. It also supports teachers as they use the approach in their own elementary or middle school classrooms.

The book offers both clear conceptual background and practical advice on how the integrated approach works. To show how teachers can use it in real-life settings, the book also provides five case studies featuring a broad range of fiction and nonfiction texts. One case describes a class in which students help the shipwrecked Swiss Family Robinson build a shelter to keep them cool under the hot sun. Another tells of students who design a hearing aid for the main character in the novel El Deafo—and then style it as a fashion accessory.
