SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Yugabyte, the leader in open source distributed SQL databases, announced today the general availability of YugabyteDB 2.1. With new generally available features, including two data center (2DC) deployments for reducing write latency, read replicas for reducing read latency, enterprise-grade encryption enhancements and TPC-C and YCSB benchmarks confirming a 10x increase in performance, YugabyteDB is the only distributed SQL database on the market to provide the speed, scale and performance developers need to deploy global, cloud native applications.
These updates make it easier than ever for organizations looking to take advantage of multi-cloud or solve for the geo-distribution of data to use YugabyteDB to develop, deploy and operationalize their modern applications with high performance and scale. YugabyteDB 2.1 eliminates wide area network (WAN) latency with the 2DC deployment and read latency with read replicas. These new models allow users to configure the database differently – or use all three deployments together – to reduce latency and solve for high volumes of data, delighting users and enabling business growth. For enterprise users of the Yugabyte Platform, the commercial self-managed DBaaS offering, creating and managing read replicas is simplified even further.
“Enterprises that deliver modern, internet-scale applications are increasingly turning to distributed SQL databases, like YugabyteDB, so they no longer have to give up the data modeling flexibility and transactional capabilities of SQL in the process of going cloud native,” said Kannan Muthukkaruppan, co-founder and CEO, Yugabyte. “YugabyteDB 2.1 builds on our vision to enable unprecedented application agility by offering greater deployment flexibility, improved performance and enhanced security controls so that businesses and their applications can fully embrace geo-distribution and multi-cloud to solve important challenges and fuel their growth.”
The YugabyteDB 2.1 and 2.0 releases were both run against the Yahoo! Cloud Serving Benchmark (YCSB). Testing results show that YugabyteDB 2.1 has a 10x increase in performance over 2.0. The jump in YugabyteDB 2.1 performance can be attributed to a number of improvements to the SQL query processing and storage layers of the distributed database. Additionally, YugabyteDB 2.1 was tested to run the complete TPC-C suite with 100 warehouses accessed by 64 terminals.
As a business-critical datastore, YugabyteDB has enterprise-grade security controls to protect data from malicious access. In addition to the authentication and authorization features previously available, YugabyteDB 2.1 introduces additional security enhancements including encryption at rest and encryption in transit via the TLS protocol. The release also includes seamless key rotation with AWS KMS as well as the Equinix Smart Key Service, allowing users to rotate encryption keys frequently, without admin overhead.
Yugabyte has also deepened its partnership with GraphQL engine leader, Hasura. By leveraging Hasura, powered by a geo-distributed SQL database like YugabyteDB, users can easily develop massively-scalable, highly-resilient, low-latency, cloud native applications.
"Hasura plus YugabyteDB brings a new layer of scalability and fault tolerance to GraphQL services, helping to further accelerate and simplify the delivery of cloud native applications," said Tanmai Gopal, CEO of Hasura. "Additionally, with the geo-distributed capabilities of YugabyteDB, we can now enable a best-of-breed approach to app development, specifically for high volume data sets in mobile, web and IoT apps. We're excited to see how our users will take advantage of this partnership to build massively-scalable cloud native apps."
In addition to the generally available features, YugabyteDB 2.1 introduces innovative features currently in beta, including Yugabyte Cloud, a fully managed database-as-a-service, and colocated tables for reducing JOIN latency. These features are critical for users with relational applications looking for high fault tolerance and geo-distribution, along with a high quality pay-as-you-go experience. Other features currently in public beta include change data capture, transactional backups and integration with Crossplane, the open source multi-cloud control plane.
As YugabyteDB has evolved in the last year, the Yugabyte community has also continued to grow, with 5x growth in GitHub stars and a 20x increase in Slack users. These users created 10x more clusters in the same period, and the committer base has grown by 3x.
