SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Continuing its transformation to build the next generation architecture practice, MK Think has added two diverse experts to its management team – Marijke Smit as Principal and Chief Operating Officer, and John Berg serving as Principal and Chief Business Officer. Differentiating itself from the typical architecture firm, MK Think employs an “augmented intelligence” approach to space creation, using a multi-dimensional method of problem solving – integrating technology, environment and human factors to uncover how people and their environments interact. By framing the right problem to implement the most effective solution, MK Think creates intelligent places where buildings are able to respond and adapt to their occupants.
“Marijke and John bring very unique and compatible skills to MK Think,” said Mark Miller, MK Think founder and CEO. “The gap between architecture and our daily life is immense. With technology cycling every 18 months, and architecture stumbling years behind, only a dynamic organization responding to change, at the actual pace of change, can be successful. At MK Think, by investing in people like Marijke and John, we can drive that change.”
Marijke Smit, Principal and COO
Smit brings to MK Think years of experience in the AEC and technology industries, holding senior management positions at Project Frog (an MK Think-incubated company) and Perkins Eastman, along with an earlier stint at MK Think as the Director of Planning. Her current focus will be to drive transformation at MK Think to enable the company’s use of spatial intelligence to improve the quality of life, while safeguarding natural resources. With a focus on the company’s commitment to its consulting, design and professional services, Smit’s background in corporate leadership and expertise in bringing technology products to market will allow her to drive the transformation of MK Think into a next-generation architecture firm, delivering the solutions organizations need to solve their space problems.
“Architecture doesn’t just mean using a building to solve a problem anymore,” said Smit. “We look closely at the underlying problem our clients are trying to solve, and, using our design expertise and data analytics, we bring buildings and places into balance, delivering responsive environments that anchor communities and elevate the quality of life. My goal is to expand our use of what we call ‘responsive adaptability’, and design for the full life cycle of physical environments, focusing on optimizing the interaction between people, places and their environment.”
Smit, who did both her undergraduate and graduate work in History and Urban Planning at Columbia University in New York, brings more than 20 years of experience in urban design, planning, entrepreneurship, green technology, community engagement, marketing, and corporate leadership. Prior to MK Think and Project Frog, she directed the Strategies Group at Perkins Eastman in New York and led Community and Environmental Affairs for the Moynihan Station Redevelopment Corporation. Smit was also elected to Building Design + Construction’s ‘40 Under 40’ class for contributions in her field.
John Berg, Chief Business Officer
Berg brings more than 30 years of experience to MK Think, specifically as a successful corporate leader and marketing expert. As Chief Business Officer, his expertise in business strategy and organizational transformation will support the company’s core business strategy of delivering the products and services most relevant to its customers. Most recently, Berg spent eight years transforming a traditional advertising agency into a highly valuable digital agency, twice being named one of the fastest growing companies in The Bay Area.
“MK Think has a unique opportunity to harness technology and the digital age to create an organization that is in step with the pace of change,” said Berg. “By combining the practice of architecture, planning and change management, with the rigor of data science and the spirit of entrepreneurship, we create an organization that can solve spatial problems. By approaching our business in new ways, and while innovating across markets, we can bring new products and services to both our clients, and in some cases, to market.”
Berg holds bachelor’s degree from Haverford College and is a graduate of Omnicom University. He has over 20 years in president/CEO roles at global organizations, including: Swirl/mcgarrybowen, Young & Rubicam California, ddb, Wenner Media and BBDO.
