LAS VEGAS--()--Some employers, carriers and other payers think Medicare Set-Asides (MSAs) are all pretty much the same, a commodity. A company calculates future medical expenses and sends a report with an allocation to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and there’s not much to be done about it.

CPC Logistics’ Workers’ Compensation Department Manager Anne Alabach and Tower MSA Partners Chief Compliance Officer Dan Anders will refute that notion when they present “Achieving Great Outcomes with your MSA Vendor” at the National Workers’ Compensation and Disability Conference & Expo (NWCDC) next month.

“There are all kinds of strategies that payers and proactive MSA providers can take to dramatically reduce MSA dollar amounts and affect how quickly and smoothly they can obtain CMS approval,” Anders said.

Through case studies, attendees will learn which factors contribute to high-dollar allocations, how to reduce costs through clinical and legal interventions, and how to measure a program’s performance. “Metrics empower you to re-engineer processes to achieve better outcomes,” Anders noted, adding that 77 percent of Tower’s CMS-approved MSAs contain no allocations for opioids and 66 percent contain no pharmacy at all.

“The relationship the client has with their MSA vendor plays a big role, and we will also talk about ways to improve this relationship,” Alabach said.
