MIAT College of Technology to Expand Houston Campus to Accommodate Growth

HOUSTON--()--The Houston campus of MIAT College of Technology is expanding to accommodate its growth in student enrollment by negotiating a 10-year lease agreement for 16,000 additional square feet adjacent to its current location at 533 Northpark Central Drive in Houston. The expanded MIAT Houston campus will cover 56,400 square feet and will include additional lab space and six more classrooms, bringing the total number of classrooms to 15.

The facility that MIAT occupies is located within Prologis Park North. MIAT is in the process of selecting a contractor and anticipates that the build-out of the additional space will be completed by Sept. 1, 2019.

MIAT offers programs that support the need for skilled workers in high demand fields such as aviation maintenance, energy, industrial manufacturing, wind power, welding, and heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR).

According to MIAT’s Houston campus president John Willis, student enrollment has increased almost 10 times in the past four years – from 45 students in 2015 to approximately 425 this year.

“MIAT was founded in the Detroit metro area 50 years ago, and our Houston school opened in 2010. Our student population in Houston is rising for many reasons: we offer both day and night classes, which is perfect for our students who are working full-time or part-time jobs; we employ instructors who have extensive industry experience; and our programs match the specific needs of employers, which makes our graduates workplace-ready in a relatively short period of time. We are supporting students of all ages and at stages of their life and career development such as high school graduates, career changers, U.S. military veterans, personnel affiliated with government agencies, and employers who are looking to MIAT to deliver continuing career education and workforce development for their team members. Our certificate and associate degree programs range from 3 months to 24 months in duration, which is a huge bonus for those who want an alternative to a traditional four-year degree track,” Willis explained.

Chris Kugle and John Ferruzzo, partners with NAI Partners, worked closely with MIAT College of Technology Houston campus leadership in securing the new lease agreement in the same facility that the school has been occupying since 2014. Cushman and Wakefield represented landlord Prologis in this transaction.

“MIAT and NAI were considering other facilities in the same industrial park; however, when a tenant vacated the adjacent space, we saw an opportunity for an easier, more cost-effective transition. Knocking out a few walls and remodeling is much more convenient and less expensive than a move that is as close as a block or two away,” commented Kugle.
