A New Approach to Investing: Randy Swan of Swan Global Investments Reveals “Investing Redefined”

More Than a Decade After the 2008 Financial Crisis, Swan Explains in New Book What Investors can do Differently to Prepare and Protect Themselves from the Next Market Meltdown

DURANGO, Colo.--()--Randy Swan, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Swan Global Investments (“Swan”), a leading provider of hedged equity solutions and mutual fund products for more than two decades, today announced the publication of his first book, Investing Redefined. The book details the limitations of Modern Portfolio Theory and why investors need a new approach to successfully navigate the redefined investment landscape. It unpacks the development of Swan’s proprietary Defined Risk Strategy (“DRS”), launched in 1997.

Randy developed the DRS to directly address the biggest risk to investors’ wealth: market risk. Past drawdowns have shown how the traditional balanced portfolio of 60% stocks and 40% bonds, as well as market timing and stock picking, failed to protect investors from losing big. The DRS seeks to define the risk of loss and limit big losses to improve investors’ probability of reaching their long-term financial goals. Randy oversees and manages this distinct, time-tested strategy across numerous product structures and asset classes such as large cap stocks, emerging market stocks, foreign developed stocks, small cap stocks, long-term bonds, gold, and more.

Before the founding of his own firm, Randy was a senior manager for KPMG’s Financial Services Group, primarily working with risk management and insurance providers. His experience at KPMG helped him in designing the DRS, as he was able to see firsthand how insurance and risk managers diminished risk:

“At this stage not only in my investment career, but also in the condition of the markets, it felt like the perfect time to share my story. The DRS was developed to be outcome-oriented and investor-centered: it seeks to define the risk of loss and directly address market risk, which the industry continually fails (or is unwilling) to do, and thereby redefine the risk/reward dynamic in investing. Investing Redefined explains how advisors and investors alike can better manage risk and navigate full market cycles to reach their objectives.”

The book explores:

1. Government, Debt and Natural Law – The “Smartest Guys in the Room” created the problems associated with ever-growing debt and asset bubble-causing monetary policy, yet unfortunately they are ones entrusted to solve the problem. Given the size of the federal debt and the Federal Reserve’s swollen balance sheet, there is no wiggle room for bailouts or ultra-accommodative monetary policy to backstop major market losses.

2. Pascal’s Wager – The rhetorical framework explains how and why investors should challenge the status quo and prepare themselves for the worst.

3. Smoothing the Ride – By not losing big, hedged equity seeks to provide superior risk-adjusted returns over a full market cycle with potentially less downside risk and volatility than unhedged equity.

The book is available online through Amazon and Barnes & Noble, as well as, local bookstores and other places fine books are sold. For more information on the book and how to order it, please visit here.
