LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--San Fernando Vice Mayor Sylvia Ballin returned today as the city’s representative on the board of directors of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.
Ballin previously served on the Metropolitan’s 38-member board from September 2007 to November 2018. She succeeds Yazdan T. Emrani, who replaced her as San Fernando’s representative last November. She is currently serving her third term on the San Fernando City Council, where she was first elected in 2011 and served as mayor from 2014 to 2015 and from 2017 to 2018. Prior to her election, Ballin spent six years on San Fernando’s Transportation and Safety Commission.
Prior to joining the Metropolitan board, Ballin worked at the district for 21 years until she retired in 2007 as a principal administrative analyst in the facilities management section. During her Metropolitan career, she served on several employee organizations, including as president of the Women’s Association for Equal Opportunity and the Hispanic Employees Association, and as vice president of the Native American/Alaskan Native Employees Organization and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1902, Group 12.
A longtime San Fernando resident, Ballin currently chairs the California Latino Water Coalition Foundation and is president of the Independent City Finance Authority. As a councilmember, she established a scholarship program administered by the San Fernando Education Commission and initiated a Foster Care Fun Day Picnic for local foster children.
Born in East Los Angeles, the Garfield High School graduate earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of La Verne. She also holds an associate of arts degree from Los Angeles Mission College.
She and her husband, Gary, have two children and four grandchildren.
The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is a state-established cooperative that delivers water to 26 member agencies serving 19 million people in six counties. The district imports water from the Colorado River and Northern California to supplement local supplies, and helps develop increased water conservation, recycling, storage and other resource-management programs.
