ANN ARBOR, Mich. & GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Michigan’s premier biosciences industry trade organization, MichBio, presents its first “Medical Device Summit” in Grand Rapids, MI on Wednesday, May 22, 2019.
The Medical Device Summit is a unique opportunity for industry professionals, students, and educators, to come together for education and networking specific to the medical device sector of the biosciences industry.

Michigan’s medical device sector employs over 11,600 people in more than 300 companies, contributes more than $14 billion to the economy, and sustains some of the highest paying jobs in the state. By some estimates, Michigan’s device industry now ranks as the 11th largest in the U.S.
Rapundalo continued, “The Summit will explore the challenges, opportunities, and timely issues facing the statewide sector. Attendees will walk away with insight about product development, compliance and risk management, supply chain best practices and more. We are especially excited to present our keynote speaker, Dr. Jeffrey Shuren of the FDA and our featured speaker, Greg Crist of the Advanced Medical Technology Association or AdvaMed.”
Dr. Jeffrey Shuren is the Director for the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) at the FDA and has a long career within the medical technology industry that will inform his keynote town hall discussion during the Summit.
Dr. Shuren previously served as Acting Center Director and has held various policy and planning positions within the FDA from 1998 to 2009, including Acting Deputy Commissioner for Policy, Planning, and Budget; Associate Commissioner for Policy and Planning; and Special Counsel to the Principal Deputy Commissioner.
Additionally, Dr. Shuren is board certified in Neurology and served as an Assistant Professor of Neurology at the University of Cincinnati. In 1998, Dr. Shuren joined the FDA as a Medical Officer in the Office of Policy. In 2000, he served as a detailee on the Senate HELP Committee and in 2001, he became the Director of the Division of Items and Devices in the Coverage and Analysis Group at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
From 1998 to 2003, he served as a Staff Volunteer in the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke Cognitive Neuroscience Section supervising and designing clinical studies on human reasoning. Dr. Shuren returned to FDA as the Assistant Commissioner for Policy in 2003 and assumed his current position in September 2009.
In addition to Dr. Shuren, the Summit will feature a “State of the Industry” presentation from Greg Crist, the Chief Advocacy Officer and Head of External Affairs at AdvaMed, the world’s leading medical device technology trade organization.
In his role, Mr. Crist is responsible for the Association’s advocacy efforts, representing interests from tax and trade policies through regulatory issues before the FDA, CMS, EPA, and other federal agencies. He also leads the public affairs team, responsible for all research, message development, and communications for more than 400 global medtech companies.

The event will take place at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine’s Secchia Center in downtown Grand Rapids with a networking breakfast beginning at 7:45 a.m. and finishing with an evening reception from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.
