ZEDEDA Announces Project EVE, Partners with The Linux Foundation to Develop an Open On-Prem Enterprise Edge Computing Architecture

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--()--ZEDEDA, a startup powering the edge of the enterprise, today announced that it is working with The Linux Foundation to launch Project EVE as part of the organization’s new LF Edge umbrella. Project EVE aims to develop an open, agnostic and standardized architecture unifying the approach to developing and orchestrating cloud-native applications across the enterprise edge.

The Project EVE community is currently in the partner recruitment phase as part of LF Edge and anticipates releasing open source project code in the first half of 2019.

A major hurdle to the successful implementation of next-generation cloud applications is enabling cloud-native applications to operate at the enterprise edge, and ensure the diverse hardware environment can be built, managed and orchestrated in a standardized way. The “enterprise edge” poses a unique challenge in that typically the locations are highly distributed, the hardware is on-premises and very diverse, and connectivity spans a diversity of protocols ranging from industry-specific legacy connectors to recently introduced wireless protocols.

Extending Applications to Edge Devices

“The Linux Foundation is the ideal organization to lead this effort, drawing from their experience in setting de facto standards via the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, which over the last decade has successfully worked to overcome the challenges faced by cloud computing,” said Shaposhnik.

Operating as an extension of the cloud and its functionality, the promise of cloud-native edge computing is simple, standardized orchestration, enabling developers to extend cloud applications to edge devices safely without the need for specialized engineering tied to specific hardware platforms.
