ZEDEDA Announces Project EVE, Partners with The Linux Foundation to Develop an Open On-Prem Enterprise Edge Computing Architecture

  • Open source Project EVE (Edge Virtualization Engine) chartered to create open, agnostic edge architecture targeting on-premise, cyber-physical enterprise edge
  • Joins LF Edge, The Linux Foundation’s new umbrella organization to establish an open, interoperable framework for edge computing independent of hardware, silicon, cloud, or operating system.
  • Project EVE establishes a lightweight virtualization engine and open APIs for IoT edge gateways and edge servers with built-in security for enterprise applications including industrial automation, clean energy, retail and beyond
  • Embraces zero-trust as the de-facto method for securing on-prem edge devices

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--()--ZEDEDA, a startup powering the edge of the enterprise, today announced that it is working with The Linux Foundation to launch Project EVE as part of the organization’s new LF Edge umbrella. Project EVE aims to develop an open, agnostic and standardized architecture unifying the approach to developing and orchestrating cloud-native applications across the enterprise edge.

The Project EVE community is currently in the partner recruitment phase as part of LF Edge and anticipates releasing open source project code in the first half of 2019.

A major hurdle to the successful implementation of next-generation cloud applications is enabling cloud-native applications to operate at the enterprise edge, and ensure the diverse hardware environment can be built, managed and orchestrated in a standardized way. The “enterprise edge” poses a unique challenge in that typically the locations are highly distributed, the hardware is on-premises and very diverse, and connectivity spans a diversity of protocols ranging from industry-specific legacy connectors to recently introduced wireless protocols.

“Open source is the ideal approach for enabling app developers to navigate the crowded, diverse, multi-vendor edge that exists in the enterprise today,” said Roman Shaposhnik, Co-Founder and VP Product & Strategy, ZEDEDA. “By accelerating the development of cloud-native edge applications, Project EVE is paving the way for the next generation of edge applications in enterprises — from robotics to AI to predictive analytics and automation.”

“The enterprise edge today is, in fact, comparable to the smartphone market before 2007 — embedded systems with application-specific hardware dominated making the modern day smartphone a futuristic dream,” said Said Ouissal, CEO of ZEDEDA. “Project EVE sets edge hardware on a path to freeing application developers to focus on innovation as Android did for smartphone app developers in the 2000’s.”

Extending Applications to Edge Devices

“The Linux Foundation is the ideal organization to lead this effort, drawing from their experience in setting de facto standards via the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, which over the last decade has successfully worked to overcome the challenges faced by cloud computing,” said Shaposhnik.

Operating as an extension of the cloud and its functionality, the promise of cloud-native edge computing is simple, standardized orchestration, enabling developers to extend cloud applications to edge devices safely without the need for specialized engineering tied to specific hardware platforms.

"We're pleased to welcome Project EVE to the new LF Edge umbrella organization," said Arpit Joshipura, general manager, The Linux Foundation. "As a community, LF Edge will establish an open, interoperable framework for edge computing independent of hardware, silicon, cloud, or operating system. Project EVE contributes extensive work from ZEDEDA in creating a zero-trust security framework and virtualization software for the enterprise edge that inherently addresses security, latency and reliability needs. We're looking forward to accelerating development and implementation of applications at the edge."
