LONDON--()--The global greenhouse horticulture market is expected to post a CAGR of nearly 11% during the period 2018-2022, according to the latest market research report by Technavio.

A key factor driving the growth of this market are the improvements in CO2 extraction technologies for greenhouses. Plants need CO2 to produce glucose during the process of photosynthesis. The amount of CO2 available in the air is only 0.04% by volume. Greenhouses require additional CO2 to be given to the plant for increasing the yield, even with proper ventilation. CO2 can be extracted from the air using different techniques. Earlier techniques for achieving optimum levels of CO2 included capturing CO2 using biomass or geological engineering. A recent technique called direct air capture captures CO2 directly from the atmosphere.

This market research report on the global greenhouse horticulture market 2018-2022 also provides an analysis of the most important trends expected to impact the market outlook during the forecast period. Technavio classifies an emerging trend as a major factor that has the potential to significantly impact the market and contribute to its growth or decline.

In this report, Technavio highlights the increasing relevance of LED growth lights in greenhouse horticulture as one of the key emerging trends in the global greenhouse horticulture market:

Global greenhouse horticulture market: Increasing relevance of LED growth lights in greenhouse horticulture

Natural sunlight is not sufficient for the development of plants inside a greenhouse especially during seasons, such as rainy, autumn, and winter, where the sunlight can be blocked by clouds. Furthermore, there are plants that photosynthesize when the day is long or short; these can be classified as long-day and short-day plants. Horticulture lighting solutions aim to induce photosynthesis in plants for these conditions by applications called photoperiodic and supplemental lighting.

“The horticulture lighting solutions started with sodium lamps back in 1995 and have evolved into LED solutions as of 2017. LEDs can be easily adjusted for the wavelength to fall into the PAR range. Compared to other light sources such as high-pressure sodium lamps, LEDs are safer to operate, produce lesser heat, last longer, and can be integrated into control systems to mimic sunrise, daylight, and sunset,” says a senior analyst at Technavio for research on power.
