North Carolina Virtual Academy Welcomes Back Students for the 2018-2019 School Year on August 22

DURHAM, N.C.--()--Students and teachers at North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA) will start the 2018-2019 school year on August 22, simply by turning on their computers. A full-time, online public charter school authorized by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, NCVA provides a tuition-free public education for students in grades K-12 across the state. The school has served students from 98 of the state’s 100 counties and is the only public charter school option afforded to some families.

“At NCVA, we are proud to offer families the option to attend public school at home,” said head of school Joel Medley. “Our inspired teachers and the online platform empower students to learn in ways that meet their unique needs, while keeping them connected to their peers and their communities. Our focus can be summarized in six words – every child, every class, every day.”

Combining innovative technology with a rigorous curriculum led by North Carolina-licensed teachers, NCVA provides each student with a personalized learning experience. Students take a full course load in the core subjects of math, science, language arts, history, art, music and physical education, as well as electives, honors and Advanced Placement® courses in high school. High school juniors and seniors have the opportunity to earn college credit through the College and Career Promise Initiative through local community colleges.

NCVA’s dedicated teachers facilitate lessons during live, interactive online classes, allowing students to enjoy a safe learning environment. In addition to scheduled classes, teachers offer one-on-one instruction and support, online chat sessions and family phone calls to build close partnerships with parents and students in support of their academic success.

Students enroll in online school for a variety of reasons, including advanced learning, a bullying-free environment, and the ability to balance their education with extracurricular pursuits or medical needs.

Throughout the year, NCVA builds a sense of community through in-person field trips, community service opportunities, and social outings, and celebrates graduating seniors with an in-person commencement ceremony in the spring. Virtual clubs and organizations also allow students to further explore shared interests together in the online setting.

NCVA is still accepting enrollment applications for limited openings for the 2018-2019 school year. Families are encouraged to attend an online or in-person information session hosted by the school.
