LegitScript Partners with Facebook to Improve Addiction Treatment Advertising, Address Opioid Addiction

Facebook to require LegitScript certification for providers of drug and alcohol addiction treatment who want to advertise in the United States

PORTLAND, Ore.--()--LegitScript, the leader in merchant and advertiser certification and monitoring in the e-commerce and payment sectors, is partnering with Facebook to improve the integrity of the online space for addiction treatment providers. Starting today, Facebook requires providers of drug and alcohol addiction treatment advertising to the United States to be certified by LegitScript.

John Horton, President and CEO of LegitScript, said the partnership is an important step in curbing predatory practices. “By requiring addiction treatment providers to be vetted before they can advertise, Facebook will make a significant impact on curtailing the reach of fraudulent drug and alcohol treatment centers that exist to exploit patients’ recovery efforts and insurance billing opportunities,” Horton said. “It’s encouraging to see leading platforms such as Facebook take this issue seriously and act to protect patient safety.”

LegitScript’s Addiction Treatment Certification launched in July as part of a partnership with Google, which requires LegitScript certification for addiction treatment providers looking to advertise. Applicants whose facilities are certified through LegitScript will now be able to advertise on both Google Ads and Facebook Ads.

The program has received the support of the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, Center on Addiction, the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers, and Facing Addiction with NCADD. These organizations and others have formed an advisory committee to LegitScript for this certification program, which ensures continuous improvement and accountability.

LegitScript’s certification and monitoring program for regulated healthcare merchants, such as internet pharmacies and telemedicine providers, is already recognized by Facebook and others, including Visa, Mastercard, Google, and Bing.
