NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP announced today that Brooke E. Cucinella, a federal securities fraud prosecutor, will join the Firm’s New York office in September as a Litigation Partner.
Brooke will join the Firm from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, where she has served since 2012 as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Criminal Division and as a senior member of the Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force. As a federal prosecutor, she tried multiple significant cases and oversaw numerous investigations involving federal and state law enforcement and regulatory agencies, including the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Brooke has been responsible for investigating and prosecuting a wide range of complex financial crimes, including accounting fraud, insider trading, market manipulation, wire fraud, bank fraud, tax fraud and money laundering. She also has significant experience coordinating cross-border investigations.
“We are delighted to welcome Brooke to the Firm,” said Bill Dougherty, Chairman of Simpson Thacher’s Executive Committee. “Her extensive trial and investigative experience will be a wonderful addition to our substantial bench of experienced trial lawyers and former government attorneys.”
As an Assistant United States Attorney, Brooke successfully tried a number of prominent cases, including the prosecution of William “Billy” Walters, a well-known professional sports gambler convicted in a $40 million insider trading scheme, the largest insider case brought against an individual in the Southern District, and the prosecution of David Blaszcak, a federal government employee, and three others including a political intelligence consultant and two hedge fund portfolio managers, all convicted of insider trading.
Jon Youngwood, Co-Head of the Firm’s Litigation Department, said, “Brooke has outstanding experience. She was lead prosecutor in numerous jury trials, coordinated cross-border investigations and has argued high-profile appeals. She will be a great addition to our team.” Steve Cutler, former General Counsel of JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Director of Enforcement at the SEC, who recently joined Simpson Thacher, added, “Brooke is an outstanding trial lawyer. Her experience investigating and prosecuting high-profile matters in the Southern District will be a valuable asset to our clients, and I look forward to working with her.”
“I am excited to join Simpson Thacher and return to advising clients in private practice,” said Brooke. “I particularly look forward to working alongside such an extremely talented group of former prosecutors, government lawyers and litigators.”
Prior to joining the Southern District in 2012, Brooke was Counsel at another international law firm, where she focused on government and internal investigations. She received her J.D., magna cum laude, from Fordham University School of Law, where she was a member of the Order of the Coif.
Simpson Thacher’s Global Litigation Department represents a wide range of sophisticated clients, including financial institutions, corporations, boards, audit and special committees, and senior executives, in their most significant matters. The Firm offers a substantial bench of talent to effectively handle litigations, government and internal investigations, arbitrations and cross-border disputes in North and South America, Asia and Europe.
