Metactive Presents Results from Nonclinical Research Study Treating Peripheral Arteries

Results Compare the Blockstent Microcatheter™ to Commercially Available Vascular Plugs and Coils

FAIRWAY, Kan.--()--Metactive Medical Inc. (Metactive), a medical device company developing innovative products for the treatment of neurovascular and peripheral vascular diseases, announced today that Dr. Kieran Murphy, Professor, Vice Chair and Director of Research in the Department of Medical Imaging at the University of Toronto, presented new nonclinical results from Metactive’s peripheral vascular research program at the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) Annual Scientific Meeting.

In a poster titled “Comparison of Blockstent™ Microcatheter with Amplatzer™ Vascular Plugs and Cook Nester® Embolization Coils in Canine Model of Acute and Chronic Arterial Occlusion”, Dr. Murphy presented results comparing the use of Metactive’s Blockstent Microcatheter™, a novel over-the-wire embolic device for the occlusion of peripheral arteries and veins, with commercially available vascular plugs and coils to occlude axillary and internal thoracic arteries in a well-accepted model. Results from the study show that the placement of the Blockstent Microcatheter resulted in immediate and complete occlusion in all eight treatments. At 4-week follow-up, histology showed a mean arterial occlusion of 98%. No arteries treated with Amplatzer™ Vascular Plugs or Nester® Coils showed immediate occlusion by angiography. The average time to achieve complete occlusion was approximately 30 minutes for the Amplatzer™ Vascular Plugs and approximately 4 minutes for the Nester® Coils. At 4-week follow up, arteries treated with the Amplatzer™ Vascular Plugs showed 57% mean occlusion and arteries treated with Nester® Coils showed 81% mean occlusion, by histology.

Physicians have long desired a deliverable vascular plug that can be placed with a high degree of accuracy and provides immediate, complete, and lasting vessel occlusion with a low risk of migration. These early results support the potential for the Blockstent Microcatheter to meet that need,” said Dr. Murphy.

The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) Annual Scientific Meeting was held on March 17 - 22, 2018 in Los Angeles.

About Blockstent Microcatheter

The Blockstent Microcatheter is a novel peripheral vascular embolization device comprising a 3.3 Fr, highly flexible .014” guidewire-compatible microcatheter delivery system and an inflatable, detachable metallic balloon that delivers immediate, complete, and lasting vessel occlusion.

About Peripheral Artery and Vein Embolization

More than 400,000 peripheral artery and vein embolization procedures are performed worldwide each year using coils and vascular plugs. There is a need for peripheral artery and vein embolization devices that are highly flexible and deliverable, can be placed with a high degree of precision, are resistant to migration, and provide immediate, complete, and lasting artery and vein occlusion.
