U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell Completes First Broadcast Interview as Chairman with Marketplace’s® Kai Ryssdal

Powell shares insight on wages, trade and reaffirms independence of the Federal Reserve

LOS ANGELES--()--Today, Marketplace’s Kai Ryssdal interviewed U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, in Powell’s first broadcast interview since becoming Chairman in February, 2018.

The conversation covered a variety of topics, including wages, transparency, inflation, and trade. He also reaffirmed the independence of the Federal Reserve, stating: “We do our work in a strictly nonpolitical way, based on detailed analysis, which we put on the record transparently.” He continued, “We don’t take political considerations into account.”

As Federal Reserve Chairman, Jerome Powell plays a vital role in steering the American economy. He was sworn in as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in February of this year, under the Trump administration. Powell also serves as Chairman of the Federal Reserve’s Open Market Committee and the Federal Reserve System's principal monetary policymaking body. Powell was an undersecretary of the Treasury under President George H.W. Bush, with responsibility for policy on financial institutions, the Treasury debt market, and related areas. Powell joined the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors in 2012.
