NORTH BEND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oregon Virtual Academy (ORVA), a statewide online public charter school, will hold an in-person graduation ceremony to celebrate the Class of 2018 on Saturday, June 9, at 2 p.m. at Western Oregon University’s gymnasium.
Oregon state senator Arnie Roblan will deliver the keynote address. “Congratulations to the Oregon Virtual Academy Class of 2018,” Senator Roblan said. “As a former high school principal and educator, I am proud to be able to honor these graduates for their hard work. As the state senator representing the Oregon Coast, taking the time to congratulate students on their achievements is one of my favorite parts of the job. Education is key to every child’s success, and graduation represents an important milestone toward future success.”
More than 150 students will graduate from ORVA, which serves students statewide in kindergarten through 12th grade. The rigorous and engaging curriculum includes Advanced Placement® courses for high school students. Dual enrollment opportunities to earn college credits are available for qualified high school students in select courses, as well. ORVA also offers credit recovery opportunities.
Class of 2018 valedictorian Amani Hawash plans to attend Oregon State University’s Honors College to major in BioHealth Sciences and hopes to pursue a career in the medical field. Salutatorian Nora Dykeman, who completed nearly a full year of college credits through the Expanded Options program and served as president of ORVA’s National Honor Society, plans to attend Linn Benton Community College and pursue a career in the field of occupational therapy. Both students will address their classmates, along with board chairman Brian Bray.
ORVA’s 154 graduates – the largest graduating class in the school’s history – report that they have been accepted to a number of colleges and universities, including Portland State University, University of Oregon, Southern Oregon University, Point Loma Nazarene University, University of Alaska-Anchorage, Washington State University, Western Oregon University and Portland Community College. Some students also plan to enlist in the military.
ORVA’s students have built strong relationships with their classmates during their time with the school. They interact with each other through their virtual classrooms, as well as discussion threads and instant messaging. In addition, ORVA’s active, supportive school community organizes fun monthly activities where students can get together in person. The school also offers a wide range of clubs. Graduation allows the students to celebrate their accomplishment together.
Students choose online school for a variety of reasons, including a safe learning environment, advanced learning options and the ability to support extracurricular pursuits or medical needs.
