North Carolina Virtual Academy to Celebrate First-Ever Graduating Class on June 8

Online School Honors Class of 2018 with In-Person Celebration

DURHAM, N.C.--()--North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA) will celebrate its first graduating class with an in-person commencement ceremony on Friday, June 8 at Kings Park International Church in Durham. A full-time, online public school program serving students in grades K-12, NCVA is available tuition-free to students across the state.

The Class of 2018’s 40 students are the first to graduate from NCVA, which opened in 2015. NCVA students access a robust online curriculum in core subjects, as well as a host of electives and honors courses. They attend live virtual classes taught by state-licensed teachers, and graduates earn a high school diploma.

General Assembly Representative D. Craig Horn will deliver the keynote address.

“NCVA is preparing the next generation of North Carolina’s leaders to embark with confidence on their next chapter,” said Representative Horn. “Whether they are heading off to college or joining the full-time workforce, the Class of 2018 has been set up for success thanks to this supportive online learning community.”

Members of the Class of 2018 report having been offered more than $270,000 in scholarships. Graduating senior Tyler Milton was selected by the North Carolina Veterans Commission for the State Veterans Scholarship, which includes a full four-year scholarship to any public institution in the state.

Members of the class report having been accepted to colleges and universities across the country, including: Campbell University, Eastern Carolina University, Pace University, Radford University, St. Martin's University, Texas A&M University, University of the Pacific, and campuses across the University of North Carolina system.

Kevin P. Chavous, K12 President of Academics, Policy and Schools will provide welcoming remarks at the ceremony. Mr. Chavous, NCVA Head of School Joel Medley, and graduating seniors are available for media interviews.
