Ohio Virtual Academy to Hold Commencement Ceremony

Online Public School to Honor Class of 2018 with In-Person Celebration

MAUMEE, Ohio--()--Ohio Virtual Academy (OHVA) will celebrate the Class of 2018 at an in-person commencement ceremony for middle and high school students on Saturday, June 2 at the World Harvest Church in Canal Winchester. An accredited, full-time, online public charter school, OHVA is available tuition-free to students in grades K-12 across the state.

Collectively, the senior Class of 2018’s 1,091 students report having been offered more than $1.5 million in college scholarships, and 55 students will graduate with honors. The senior class reports having been accepted to colleges and universities across the country, including: Brigham Young University, Carnegie Mellon University, Columbus State Community College, Miami University, Ohio State University, and the University of North Carolina. More than a dozen graduates will enter military service.

Ohio State Representatives Dorothy Pelanda and Kyle Koehler will deliver the keynote addresses at the school’s 8th and 12th grade Saturday graduations, respectively.

“I am a strong believer in school choice. With five children, I know personally that every student learns differently,” said Representative Koehler. “I couldn't be more excited to celebrate the Ohio Virtual Academy Class of 2018. They are not only making their first step into adulthood by graduating from high school - they have made the choice to reach this milestone by picking a path that was tailored to fit their needs.”

OHVA students access a robust online curriculum in core subjects, as well as a host of electives. High school students can also explore Career Technical Education (CTE) course work through OHVA’s Destinations program. Destinations introduces students to information technology and specialty trade skills through online CTE courses. More than 150 graduating seniors will enter the workforce or begin apprenticeship or vocational programs.

“OHVA’s graduates are a tribute to the power of public education,” Representative Pelanda said. “Congratulations to all the graduates and their families, and best of luck as you continue your education.”

Mitchell Silvernail will serve as the senior class valedictorian, and Holly Boso will serve as salutatorian. Mitchell plans to attend the University of Toledo, where he has already earned three years of credits through the state’s College Credit Plus dual enrollment program. Nearly 200 members of the Class of 2018 have earned college credits through this program, and seven students will have earned an Associate Degree along with their high school diploma.
