IRVING, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--GI pathologists at Inform Diagnostics, formerly Miraca Life Sciences, continue to publish noteworthy articles in respected peer-reviewed medical journals.
One recent article challenges current clinical assumptions about gastrointestinal polyps. Published in American Journal of Gastroenterology, “Lesions of All Types Exist in Colon Polyps of All Sizes” reports the stratification of advanced neoplasia by polyp size. The authors from Inform Diagnostics, gastrointestinal pathologists Kevin Turner, DO, and Robert M. Genta, MD, with their collaborator Amnon Sonnenberg, MD, MSc., reviewed histopathologic records of 550,811 polyps from 483,998 unique patients who underwent colonoscopy with polypectomy between January 2008 and December 2014. The article concludes that “…one quarter of all advanced histopathology existed in polyps of <10 mm.”
Another significant recent article provides further diagnostic criteria for eosinophilia by quantifying the normal eosinophil content in the duodenum. “Quantification of the duodenal eosinophil content in adults: a necessary step for an evidence-based diagnosis of duodenal eosinophilia” was published in Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics by authors Genta, Turner, and Sonnenberg. Eosinophils were counted in specimens from 370 adults. Additionally, patient records were extracted from a database of 458,668 adult subjects. The article concludes that “…a cut-off count of 20 eos/hpf would be useful to separate patients with normal from those with elevated duodenal eosinophilic infiltrations.”
The above article follows up on previous research led by Dr. Genta that establish criteria for the eosinophil content of the colon (The American Journal of Surgical Pathology, 2017) and for the eosinophil content of the stomach (Modern Pathology, 2011).
