KidsCode Expands to Teach Free Programming Classes to More Utah Children

Volunteers from Health Catalyst and Nuvi join InsideSales.com, Domo and Vivint to teach basic coding skills that will help close the “clear tech skills gap” in US; volunteer here

SILICON SLOPES, Utah--()--More Utah technology companies are joining InsideSales.com’s KidsCode to teach free basic computer science and programming to local elementary students. Volunteers from Health Catalyst and Nuvi are working with others from InsideSales.com, Domo and Vivint at seven Utah schools.

Through the KidsCode program, volunteers help 4th-6th graders develop new skills and raise their level of confidence when dealing with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

KidsCode, launched in 2014 by InsideSales.com’s Do Good Foundation, has already trained more than 1,500 Utah children using Code.org curriculum. More companies, including those from other states, can sign up to adopt a school close to them by visiting https://www.kidscode.org/kidscode.

I’m always thrilled when more companies join KidsCode, because it gives us the opportunity to expand the program to more children around Utah and beyond,” said Dave Elkington, CEO, InsideSales.com. “There is a clear tech skills gap, and for Silicon Slopes to advance its standing to a global tech hub, we need to close it. This can only be achieved when private companies partner with public schools.”

"We have been sending volunteers to a local elementary school since September 2017 and have nothing but high praise for this program,” said Crystal Anderson, People Operations Business Partner at Health Catalyst. “The kids love it, the volunteers love it, and we are truly opening the kids’ eyes to the possibilities they have ahead of them if they pursue coding."

Schools participating in the 24-week program now or within the next year include:

  • Maple Ridge Elementary in Mapleton
  • Sage Creek Elementary in Springville
  • American Academy of Innovation in Jordan
  • Foothill Elementary in Orem
  • Greenwood Elementary in American Fork
  • Plymouth Elementary in Taylorsville
  • Mapleton Elementary School

The KidsCode initiative is seeking more companies and schools to join the program, allowing even more kids to learn about the professional opportunities presented by STEM education.

Domo chose to partner with a Title 1 school in our own backyard as a way to give back to our community. Through KidsCode, and with the help of coding education by Code.org, Domo employees have enjoyed watching the progress of the over 200 fifth graders with whom they work and are humbled when the kids say that coding class is the favorite part of their day,” said Cathy Donahoe, VP of human resources at Domo.

Domo is committed to supporting the next generation of tech talent, and KidsCode is one of many programs that advance that mission. We will continue to support this program and hope to see more companies and schools participate in KidsCode in the future."

The Do Good Foundation is a 1-1-1 philanthropic model, where companies donate 1% time, resources and product to worthy causes that make the world a better place. The Do Good Foundation also runs the GirlsCode program, which is aimed at young girls and attempts to develop their interest in computer science.
