Teachers Can Make Sure STEM-Related Lessons Are More Than Just Cool Projects with a New NSTA Book

Designing Meaningful STEM Lessons book cover

ARLINGTON, Va.--()--Designing Meaningful STEM Lessons shows how teachers in grades 3–8 can take lessons they’re already familiar with and, through small changes, ensure they contain the content students most need to learn. The new NSTA Press book introduces a conceptual framework that keeps science front and center as teachers embed engineering, technology, and science applications—much as they would embed literacy skills into their lessons.

Designing Meaningful STEM Lessons provides 13 ready-to-use lessons in physical science, life science, and Earth and space science. To fulfill the authors’ promise to be both relevant and exciting, the lessons have titles such as “Cell-fie” and “Aircraft Catapult.” But the lessons are more than just cool projects. All correlate with A Framework for K–12 Science Education, take a constructivist approach, and operate within the 5E instructional model. Examples throughout are easy to follow, can be used with existing science lessons, and help students gain content knowledge.

The authors are veteran science educators who honed their framework through extensive state and district training sessions. They write that for teachers who want to deliver rigorous instruction, “the process of implementing STEM curriculum within the classroom is quite nebulous on the best of days.” By helping teachers think about STEM as a “process and not a thing,” Designing Meaningful STEM Lessons offers clear, easy, and effective ways to bring STEM learning to life in the classroom.
