Tohoku University Deploys vSMP Foundation for ‘The Supercomputer System’

Software-Defined Computing Solution, in Combination With Fujitsu Servers, Selected Over Scale-Up Hardware Solutions

FORT LEE, N.J.--()--ScaleMP™, a leading provider of virtualization solutions for high-end computing, today announced that Fujitsu is deploying at the Institute of Fluid Science (IFS) at Tohoku University its largest x86 system, with 12 SMP systems of 2080 CPUs (52 sockets), out of which four with 20TB RAM and eight with 5TB RAM each, and one system dedicated to visualization with 1440 CPUs (36 sockets) and 14 TB RAM. These new systems will significantly upgrade and improve the performance of the institute’s core computation facility. “The Supercomputer System” is expected to exceed 2.7 petaflops. Its SMP portion, one of the most powerful SMPs ever deployed, is based on vSMP Foundation, and has the ability to dynamically resize its SMP systems up to 128 Xeon Scalable Processors and 48TB of shared memory per SMP.

ScaleMP’s vSMP Foundation delivers a high-end computing solution, aggregating the power of multiple Fujitsu PRIMERGY x86 servers into large-scale SMP servers, enabling the execution of multi-threaded, shared-memory workloads. It provides a more flexible and cost-effective alternative to legacy, hardware-only SMPs, while increasing overall data center efficiency and reducing operational costs. The Fujitsu/ScaleMP solution was selected by IFS in light of its superior performance compared to the alternatives, in addition to its lowest overall cost.

“We are excited about this recent addition to our ever-expanding list of leading scientific, research institution and enterprise clients worldwide, especially given IFS’s long history with hardware-only SMPs from SGI/HPE,” said Shai Fultheim, founder and CEO of ScaleMP. “We continue to see strong growth in deployments of vSMP Foundation as a clear enabler to do more with a limited budget. With software-defined computing, customers can buy more scale-up compute power for the same investment and increase the utilization of IT investment, as the system can be resized dynamically to workload requirements and be used in either cluster or shared-memory mode.”

About vSMP Foundation

vSMP Foundation aggregates multiple, industry-standard, off-the-shelf x86 servers into a single virtual high-end system. vSMP Foundation provides customers with an alternative to traditional, expensive, symmetrical multiprocessing (SMP) systems, and it also offers simplified clustering infrastructure with a single operating system. It supports aggregation of as many as 128 servers into a single virtual SMP system and also enables the transparent use of NVM storage as system memory, providing customers with:

  • Expanded system memory – to as much as 2 PB of shared memory for large-memory requirements – by using DRAM from other servers or by using enterprise-grade non-volatile memory
  • As many as 32,768 CPUs on a virtual SMP with proven scalability and record-breaking memory bandwidth
  • Ease of use and lowest total cost of ownership for clusters coupled with simplified parallel storage architecture
  • On-demand SMP with support for many common provisioning systems to enable increased data center utilization with a consolidated architecture
