Sherlock Company Announces Web Conference concerning Scale, Growth and Cost Management Strategy for Health Plans

PHILADELPHIA--()--On April 3, Sherlock Company will summarize findings on scale, growth and cost management strategy for health plans.

The presentation is based on static and dynamic views of health plans. The metrics themselves are drawn from 34 Independent / Provider – Sponsored and Blue Cross Blue Shield health plans participating in the 2017 Sherlock Benchmarks and 24 such plans participating in both 2017 and 2016. These plans collectively serve up to 48 million Americans.

In this presentation, we discuss short-term operating leverage in costs and staffing, economies of scale at a point in time, the relationship between staffing ratios and compensation and the effects of outsourcing.

Additional details will be found in PULSE, to be published later next week. Detailed summaries of the values that populate the analyses are found in the Sherlock Benchmarks themselves.

The web conference will take place on Tuesday, April 3 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time. Douglas Sherlock will offer a brief presentation, followed by questions and answers. To participate in the web conference, please register at sherlockco.com/webinar. Once registered, dial-in information and a link to connect will be provided in a confirmation email. There is no charge for this, but participation is limited.

Planning under the uncertainty in the current health insurance market entails strategies that are applicable under any scenario. Cost optimization has been called a “no-regret move” for this reason. After all, superior performance should translate into growth in market share or earnings under any environmental outcome, since optimal costs can be deployed to achieve low prices or superior quality. The Sherlock Benchmarks are a tool to inform this “no-regret move.”

This is the 21th consecutive year of the Sherlock Benchmarks. With cumulative experience of 800 health plan years, they are “the gold standard” of benchmarks used to measure and manage health plan administrative activities.
