BOSTON--()--The Museum of Science is kicking off Pi Day celebrations by attempting to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the most shaving cream pies tossed at one time. The free event will be held at City Hall Plaza on Saturday, March 10th. The celebrations will continue at the Museum of Science with special Pi Day activities on March 14th.

"Celebrating Pi Day is an easy way to get kids and their families excited about math and spark new conversations at the dinner table," said Mayor Martin J. Walsh. "I have no doubt Boston residents will be eager to take on this challenge and toss over 1,180 pies setting a new Guinness World Record right on City Hall Plaza. To continue the fun, I urge families to finish the day at the Museum of Science and take advantage of all the free activities offered there in celebration of Pi Day. I'd like to thank the Museum of Science for the impressive educational programming they provide Boston each and every day, and Guinness World Records, Gillette, and Table Talk Pies for making this event possible."

Said Ioannis Miaoulis, president and director of the Museum of Science, “Pi Day is a special day here at the Museum because it gives us the chance to celebrate math and inspire our visitors to have fun with it. This year, we are bringing it to a new level with the help of Gillette, Table Talk Pies, the City of Boston and GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS.”

The current record of for most shaving cream pies tossed at one time is 1,180 so the Museum is looking for 1,200 participants, ages five and up. The activities will start at 11 a.m. The event is sponsored by Gillette, Table Talk Pies and the City of Boston. GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ is also supporting the event by having one of its adjudicators on-site to oversee the record attempt.

“We are extremely excited to play a key role in Pi Day at the Museum of Science,” said Keith Green, VP of B2B Communications & Partnerships at GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS. “This event fits in perfectly with our purpose, which is to inspire people of all ages throughout the world via the power of record breaking.”

“Science and technology have been at the core of the Gillette business for more than 100 years,” said Pankaj Bhalla, North America Brand Director at Gillette. “This partnership with the Museum of Science - and the donation of Gillette Foamy Shave Foam to make the shaving cream pies - is one simple way to combine our passion for science and shaving while having some good clean fun!”

Pi Day, the annual celebration of the mathematical constant, π, is observed on March 14th since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant digits of pi. The Museum of Science will host a full day of free activities including the first ever sunrise yoga class, a talk by national chess champion Sharon Ellen Burtman, live animal presentations, and a talk about sabermetrics in baseball.

The Museum is also doing a special fundraising campaign for the day. If 3,141 contributions are received on Pi Day, a special $250,000 gift will be made to the Museum.
