Books-A-Million to Welcome Patrisse Khan-Cullors for National Book Tour on January 20

Black Lives Matter co-founder to discuss recent memoir, sign copies of new book

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--()--Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Khan-Cullors is working with Books-A-Million to discuss her new book, “When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir.” The event will be held on Saturday, January 20 at 2 p.m. at the St. John A.M.E. Church, located at 708 15th Street North in Birmingham, Alabama, in partnership with Greater Birmingham Ministries. Talk show radio host Ron January will join Khan-Cullors for conversation and a presentation, followed by a question and answer session and book signing.

“When They Call you a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir” takes an intimate look at Khan-Cullors’ time growing up in Van Nuys, California, surrounded by a devoted family and supportive friends; it weaves her experiences into the larger picture of how predominantly Black and Latino neighborhoods are under constant systemic attack. From an unrelenting and hostile police presence, to disproportionate punitive action, to lack of basic social and medical services, Khan-Cullors and co-author Asha Bandele show how lack of personal security and dignity makes daily life an act of survival.

Khan-Cullors is an artist, organizer and freedom fighter from Los Angeles, California. In addition to being a co-founder of Black Lives Matter, she is also a performance artist, Fulbright scholar, popular public speaker and an NAACP History Maker. In 2016, Khan-Cullors received the Defender of the Dream Award from the AFL-CIO Executive Council Committee on Civil and Human Rights; the Revolution Award for Freedom from ImageNation Cinema Foundation; the Justice Award from National Center for Lesbian Rights; the Community Change Agent Award from BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Inc.; and the Glamour Women of the Year Award for The Justice Seekers. In 2017, Khan-Cullors received the Sydney Peace Prize.

This event is FREE and open to the public. Guests will have the opportunity to purchase a copy of “When They Call you a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir” through Books-A-Million at the event. For more information, visit patrissecullors.com.
