NBA Player Chris McCullough Champions Inner City Education, Partners with Tutoring America

Partnership to Provide Grant to New York City Program

NEW YORK--()--Tutoring America, a non-profit organization working to close the education gap between low and high-income students, announces a partnership with Washington Wizards star Chris McCullough on a tutoring grant supporting the academic mission of the Riverside Hawks youth basketball program.

The Riverside Hawks is an academic and athletic program in New York City, which aims to help students and families in the community leverage basketball to pursue academic opportunities and promote character development. The academic program provides after-school support, and helps students and their parents who are navigating the school admissions process.

“As a New York City native, it’s an honor to partner with Tutoring America and give back to the local community,” says McCullough. “Basketball was a guiding force in my academic career, which led me to Syracuse and ultimately to the NBA. These students have the opportunity to play basketball and reach their full academic potential through exceptional resources provided by the Hawks and Tutoring America, and I feel lucky to be a part of it.”

The $25,000 grant will go toward tutoring resources such as the SuccessMaker software, tutors and stipends. Education is highly correlated with wages, thus closing the education gap is essential in addressing poverty and quality of life for underprivileged students. Closing the education gap can increase success of young students, increase high school graduation rates and stop the cycle of poverty.

“Success in sports can inspire success in academia,” says Jay D. Hatfield, chairman and founder of Tutoring America. “We’re thrilled to have Chris’ support of the grant, and we are excited to assist the Riverside Hawks in their mission to allow student-athletes to excel. Together, we can improve academic performance and significantly increase high school and college graduation rates.”
