Increased popularity of mechatronics and robotics workshops

In the last few years, many low-cost, highly capable robotic platforms have gained traction by introducing students to the concepts of math, science, and engineering, applicable to all grade levels. As a result, there is an increase in the number of workshops catering to the spread and awareness of these concepts, along with the practical teaching of mechatronics and robotics. Vendors are increasingly opting for such workshops as they involve fewer investments and high returns.

According to Jhansi Mary, a lead analyst at Technavio for k12 and higher education research, “The workshops are generally instructor-led and emphasize heavily on the importance of experiential learning. The workshops are divided into two parts; the first part consists of presentations and delivery of theoretical knowledge, whereas the second part generally consists of hands-on learning and the students are made to apply theoretical knowledge by designing their own robots.”

Increased popularity of task-based learning

Task-based learning (TBL) is an approach wherein classroom tasks are used as a mode of training. A classroom task is an activity that is goal-oriented and is focused on learning through experiential learning. The curriculum in TBL is organized around activities and tasks.

For instance, the Task Based Training (TBT) provided by e-Yantra Lab Setup Initiative (eLSI) revolves around training teachers and implementing hands-on experiments. The online training lasts up to 3-4 months and includes periodically assigned tasks. Each of the tasks is aimed at learning a specific concept pertaining to embedded systems and robotics. After the completion of the tasks, the teams are given an opportunity to participate in a TBT challenge. In these challenges, the teams test their skills by implementing a project based on the abstraction of a real-life problem.

Advent of modular mechatronics training modules

Due to the advent of modular robotics, there is an increased emphasis on modular mechatronics training systems. These systems are targeted toward educational and industrial institutions and are tailored to support students and teachers as well as employees and customers.

For instance, Bosch Rexroth launched its new range of modular mechatronics training systems that aim at supporting the next generation of learners. These modular training modules are Industry 4.0 compliant, and they form an integral part of the Drive & Control Academy training (a modular mechatronics training provided by the company). The training module consists of three individual stations, and their design enables complete flexibility to adapt to individual needs that are appropriate for every learning path.

“The various modules provided in this training include modular hydraulics, pneumatics, and mechatronic systems. The students are supplied with modular kits along with exercises, project manuals, and supporting material for each module. The company also provides eLearning courses to students along with instructor-led training and onsite training for corporate employees,” says Jhansi.
