LONDON--()--Technavio’s latest market research report on the global keyboard, video, and mouse (KVM) switch market provides an analysis of the most important trends expected to impact the market outlook from 2017-2021. Technavio defines an emerging trend as a factor that has the potential to significantly impact the market and contribute to its growth or decline.

The KVM switch market has witnessed many innovations over the past decade, and such innovations will continue so long as cloud computing, big data analytics, and IoT devices are used in the data centers to monitor and store data.

According to Jujhar Singh, a lead analyst at Technavio for embedded systems research, “Data servers in data centers are adopting KVM switches to enable the operators to connect and access different systems and monitors through a single keyboard and mouse. This helps to ensure high security with a minimum loss of information.”

Increased adoption for KVM via optical fibers

KVM extenders usually digitalize the signal and then transmit it via two optical fibers. The multimode optical fibers cover distances up to 500 m, and single mode fibers cover up to 10 km. The single mode or multimode fiber cables are therefore used to connect and extend the signal for peripherals such as keyboards, videos, and mouse. Fiber cables have already been used to support backhaul and last mile connectivity.

With KVM switches, network operators can provide connectivity to peripherals using extensions like USB, HDMI, DVI-D, display port, and serial signals. This has increased the adoption of KVM switches by using single-mode or multimode fiber cables to extend connections to keyboards, videos, and mouse. The other features of KVM switches include USB, HDMI, DVI-D, DisplayPort, VGA, stereo audio, and serial signal extensions, which will lead to increased adoption of KVM devices in the future.

Increase in demand among SMEs

The data server infrastructure is being adopted among the small and medium enterprises across the globe. SMEs that have around 300 users and need IT infrastructure to support business-critical applications prefer to adopt micro data center modules, including IT infrastructure, for around USD 100,000. Also, SMEs (instead of colocating the data center space) are likely to opt for micro data centers with the installation of their rack infrastructure to reduce CAPEX and OPEX.

Compared with micro data centers, containerized facilities are gaining more traction in the market as disaster recovery IT modules. The demand for mini data centers will increase the need for computing as many devices are being connected to the Internet. Thus, an increase in the demand from SMEs will increase the adoption of KVM switches, which are key devices to control and monitor the data under small and medium enterprises,” says Jujhar.

Smart KVM solutions for industrial applications

KVM solutions are also useful in industrial applications such as process control stations or control rooms. The KVM switches can provide a spatial separation between the computers and operators. These KVM switches can help the operators to run the computers from a long distance without image losses. Smart KVM switches also provide features in a range of mission-critical applications such as cross display switching, the push-get function, and scenario switching to control and regulate different devices connected to control rooms. KVM switches consist of the computer module and user module and extended computer signals.

The data transmission between the computers and the control rooms is carried out with dedicated connections via CAT cable and optical fiber. KVM switches can extend the computer signals up to 140 m over CAT cables and 10,000 m over optical fibers. Thus, using optical fibers, the operator can transmit signals even in harsh industrial environments.
