Bright Health Files to Expand Insurance Coverage to Alabama

Company partners in Birmingham area with Brookwood Baptist Health

MINNEAPOLIS--()--Consumer-driven healthcare company Bright Health announced today that it plans to expand to the Birmingham, Alabama, market in 2018. Bright Health filed with the federal government to begin offering consumers Medicare Advantage plans in Alabama’s Shelby and Jefferson counties during fall 2017 enrollment for the 2018 plan year.

Bright Health is collaborating with Brookwood Baptist Health and their Physician Alliance to create a proprietary Care Partnership in the Birmingham market. Bright Health’s Care Partnership model creates a collaborative approach to care and will connect consumers to more than 700 physicians representing 28 medical and surgical specialties at Brookwood Baptist Health.

The Brookwood Baptist Physician Alliance is a clinically integrated network of committed physicians within the Brookwood Baptist Health system. The Physician Alliance is physician-led and encourages collaboration among peers to improve patient care, while remaining fiscally responsible.

“Bright Health and Brookwood Baptist Health are both dedicated to putting consumers at the center of healthcare,” said Bob Sheehy, Bright Health’s co-founder and chief executive officer. “We are pleased to partner with Brookwood Baptist and Brookwood Baptist Physician Alliance, a leading healthcare provider in central Alabama comprised of outstanding physicians, care facilities, and specialty expertise. Our shared focus will be on driving down healthcare costs, improving clinical outcomes, and enhancing consumer and provider satisfaction.”

Said Keith Parrott, Brookwood Baptist Health’s president and chief executive officer, “At Brookwood Baptist Health, we are dedicated to improving the overall well-being of our community and expanding access to care through holistic, people-centered health care. In doing this, we hope to set a new standard in service and devotion to the people of central Alabama. Collaborating with Bright Health gives Alabama an excellent, high-value option for Medicare Advantage customers.”

Alabama is the third market for Bright Health. The company first entered the Colorado market for the 2017 plan year, followed by Arizona for the 2018 plan year. Bright Health’s health insurance plans are offered directly to consumers, via broker partners, and through public and private health insurance exchanges. Additional markets, Care Partnerships, and Medicare Advantage Plans are planned for 2018 and beyond.
