Metal additive manufacturing also known as direct metal laser sintering uses Yb (Ytterbium) fiber laser fired into a bed of powdered metal. The laser aims automatically at points in space as defined by a 3D model. The direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) process involves the use of a 3D CAD model where a .stl file format is created and sent to the machine's software. A technician properly orients the geometry of this 3D model for part building and adds support structure as appropriate. After the completion of the build file, it is sliced into layers of thickness that the machine will build. This is followed by downloading the sliced build file to the DMLS machine allowing the build to begin. The DMLS machine makes use of Yb-fiber optic laser powered 200 watts.
