Sunrise Senior Living Opens New Community in San Diego

Responds to Increasing Demand for High-Quality Assisted Living and Memory Care Services

MCLEAN, Va.--()--Sunrise Senior Living will welcome residents to its newest community, Sunrise of Sabre Springs, at the end of June. Sunrise’s fourth community in the San Diego, CA area, it will serve up to 100 residents and offer assisted living as well as evidence-based memory care programming and services for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, including support in the early stages of memory loss.

The Public Policy Institute of California projects the state’s senior population will increase substantially over the next 13 years, with people 65 years and older to grow by four million. In addition, every 66 seconds, someone in the U.S. develops Alzheimer’s, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

“With many families in the San Diego area looking for high-quality senior housing and care, we’re pleased to offer them support through our new community,” said Jeff Slichta, senior vice president of Operations for Sunrise. “Families will benefit from our team members, who are dedicated, compassionate and trained to provide the best in customized care according to each resident’s preferences and needs.”

Shauna Klemp will lead Sunrise of Sabre Springs as the community’s executive director and has more than 13 years of experience with the company. She worked in skilled nursing before joining Sunrise.

“Our state-of-the-art community will provide families in surrounding Poway, CA, a premium choice to call home in a convenient location,” said Chris Winkle, chief executive officer for Sunrise. “We bring 35 years of experience serving seniors with high-quality, personalized care and programming to promote the overall wellness of our residents.”

The four-story, 68,900-square-foot community located on 12515 Springhurst Drive will provide a resident-centered approach to care through its Individualized Service Plans, with easy access to several nearby health care facilities, including Pomerado Hospital. The approximately 83-unit building allows for flexible and adaptable spaces to support Sunrise’s range of programming and activities – including Sunrise’s signature programs that bring together residents, team members, families and volunteers and provide opportunities for assisted living and Reminiscence residents to Live With Purpose. Two floors provide comfort and security for those in need of memory care, including a Reminiscence Neighborhood that serves seniors with Alzheimer’s and a Terrace Club Neighborhood, which offers tailored programming to assist residents in the early stages of memory loss.

Sunrise of Sabre Springs was designed with the beauty of southern California in mind. Outdoor spaces provide residents with the opportunity to enjoy scenic views of Poway Valley from the walking paths and outdoor terraces. The inside spaces contain senior-friendly design elements, such as well-lit common areas and strategically placed larger furniture so that residents may use it for balance throughout each room. Walls painted in contrasting colors help memory care residents navigate the community more confidently. Décor features artwork from southern California artists, including pieces that highlight local landmarks such as the San Diego Harbor, Del Mar racetrack, and Balboa Park's Cabrillo Bridge.

Additional features include Wi-Fi throughout the community for residents and families to stay connected; an electronic health record system to help ensure that residents receive the personalized care they need; a dining program that offers fresh and nutritious chef-prepared meals; and community pets to offer comfort and companionship.

Sunrise of Sabre Springs will host a public open house on Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. San Diego area families are invited to meet the Sunrise team, take a tour of the new community, and learn more about their unique approach to personalized care and programming.

The company expects to continue with strategic growth in California, including the opening of Sunrise of Pleasanton in San Francisco’s Bay Area this September.
