BEAUFORT, S.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--An analysis published by THE SAGE GROUP concludes that the Western European prevalence of PAD and CLI has grown substantially over the last 7 years. This increase primarily reflects the significantly higher prevalence of diabetes.
“Because of the epidemic of diabetes, and the fact that diabetics represent 60% to 80% of CLI patients, critical limb ischemia has grown rapidly in Western Europe. Since CLI is very costly to treat, this has serious implications for healthcare expenditures, as well as for patient morbidity and mortality,” declared Mary L. Yost, President of THE SAGE GROUP.
The largest number of citizens suffering from PAD and CLI are located in Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and France. These 5 countries account for 75% of PAD and 78% of CLI in Western Europe.
“With 940,000 citizens suffering from critical limb ischemia, Germany represents the single largest Western European market,” stated Ms. Yost. “This reflects the fact that Germany has the greatest number of elderly citizens, plus the second highest regional prevalence of diabetes,” Yost explained.
“Germany is followed closely in market size by Italy with over 766,000 people estimated to suffer from severe ischemia,” continued Ms. Yost.
Comparing the size of the Western Europe market with the U.S., Yost stated, “At 28 million, the Western European prevalence of PAD is considerably higher than the 20 million in the U.S. This reflects the greater number of middle-aged and elderly citizens. The number with CLI also exceeds that in the U.S., or 4.2 million versus 3.4 million.”
