LONDON--()--Tea is a popular drink in many parts of the world, and that popularity is only growing. While black tea is the most commonly sold variety, Infiniti Research notes that green tea’s popularity is growing around the world due to its reputation as a health drink, with properties such as antioxidants. The demand for black tea is falling slightly as more consumers begin to look for green and herbal teas instead.

The positioning of herbal tea as a heath drink that aids in fighting obesity and reducing weight is significantly increasing its appeal among Generation X. In addition, the concept of herbal tea as a wellbeing drink that helps in combating cough, cold, and stress, and as an effective digestive remedy is predominantly catching on with health-conscious consumers. Fruit-flavored herbal tea, which is caffeine free, is attracting young adults aged between 18 and 34. Infiniti Research expects these benefits to drive the global herbal tea market in the near future, surpassing USD 7.5 billion in revenue by 2020.

Market developments

A recent study by researchers at the National University of Singapore has found that regular consumption of tea can lower risk of cognitive decline. Conducted with 957 Chinese adults over the age of 55, the study observed a 50% reduction in risk. In those who had the APOE e4 gene, which is associated with greater risk of Alzheimer’s disease, risk fell by as much as 86%. The study found that any type of tea — as long as it was made from tea leaves — conferred this benefit.

While this study was restricted to a specific demographic, the benefits could easily apply to other people as well. The researchers theorize that the bioactive compounds in tea leaves may protect the brain from vascular damage and neurodegeneration. The team plans to test these compounds more thoroughly in future studies.

These findings could benefit both the tea market as a whole and black tea in particular. Black tea has less of a reputation for health benefits than other varieties do, but this study suggests that it can still be very beneficial. While further study is important in order to verify these results, the news itself nevertheless has potential to impact consumer buying behavior.
