Based on product type, the report categorizes the global milking robot market into the following segments:

  • Standalone units
  • Multiple stall units
  • Rotary units

Standalone units

“Standalone milking machines are the most popular product of the global milking robot market, generating close to 43% of the overall revenue. A majority of North American and European dairy farm users adopt standalone robotic units due their low cost and simplicity,” says Bharath Kanniappan, a lead analyst at Technavio for automation research.

Standalone or single-stall units are milking machines that utilize one robotic arm for every stall. Typically, these standalone units possess a capability to milk about 65-70 cows several times in a day. These units are perfect for small and medium sized dairy farms, where it finds the highest adoption.

Multiple stall units

The multiple small units segment of the global milking robot market is projected to reach 3.26 thousand units by 2021, with major demand for the segment arising from dairy farms seeking to increase their capacity, productivity, and throughput. A single multiple stall unit can serve many stalls, ensuring that different herds of cows are milked in a short duration. A majority of the Australian and New Zealand a majority of dairy farms prefer robotic milking by these multiple stall units, with several new farms expected to opt for these products.

Rotary units

Rotary units are finding growing adoption rates in the robotic milking industry, and is expected to showcase a CAGR of almost 11% over the forecast period. These units are ideal for both batch and voluntary milking, making it an ideal choice for farms with a large number of cows,” says Bharath.

The robotic rotary unit is a relatively modern technology capable of providing dairy farms with the benefits of milking a large herd of cows at the same time to increase the productivity of the process. In a rotary unit, cows are placed at 30 degrees with their heads facing out and the rear end in contact with the five robotic arms which perform different milking operations.
