New Report Shows 720x1280 Is Now the Most Used Smartphone Screen Resolution

Report also tracks gains for Android and 5”+ devices

DUBLIN--()--DeviceAtlas, a leading supplier of intelligence on mobile devices, today released its quarterly Mobile Web Intelligence Report for Q3 2016. The new report, focused on screen sizes and screen resolutions, revealed that 1440x2560 (QHD) is now growing at the fastest pace, while 720x1280 is the most used smartphone screen resolution worldwide.

Key Findings for Q3 2016 Include:

  • QHD (1440x2560) screen resolution is now growing at the fastest pace (it reached over 20% share in the USA)
  • 720x1280 is now arguably the most common resolution leading in 9 countries analyzed
  • 5.5-inch and 5.7-inch diagonal screen sizes are growing rapidly in all markets analyzed
  • Small screen sizes are still a very strong niche especially 4-inch devices
  • Android grew faster than iOS between Q2 2016 and Q3 2016
  • Samsung Browser is now the third most used mobile browser worldwide, after Safari and Chrome Mobile

“This quarter’s device data shows that large screen sizes and massive screen resolutions are gaining traction everywhere. We expect that the humble 720x1280 category may lose its dominance in the not too distant future,” said Martin Clancy, DeviceAtlas’ Head of Marketing.

The DeviceAtlas Mobile Web Intelligence Report analyzes mobile device traffic to hundreds of thousands of websites around the world to show the most used smartphones, screen sizes, screen resolutions, phone makers, and more. The Q3 2016 edition is the latest installment in an ongoing series of quarterly reports which present the latest statistics on the mobile market helping the industry better understand which mobile devices are the most used to access websites today.

DeviceAtlas has led the way in device detection and intelligence since 2008 and is used widely by advertising platforms, analytics solutions, web brands, and telcos to accurately identify and analyze traffic from the many devices active on their sites and networks.

Major ad tech players use DeviceAtlas’ device intelligence to enable ad targeting and campaign reporting at device level. With DeviceAtlas web analytics solutions can offer detailed mobile device reporting, while telcos use device intelligence combined with TACs to better understand phones used on their networks.
