Prostate Cancer Information for Veterans

CHICAGO--()--Military veterans who have been exposed to Agent Orange or other herbicides in the Vietnam or Korean wars have a greater risk of developing prostate cancer and are more likely to have an aggressive form of the disease.

In an effort to recognize Veterans Day with support and education for veterans, a new web page is available at: www.ustoo.org/military-veterans from Us TOO International, a non-profit that provides educational resources and support services to the prostate cancer community at no charge. The web page features information on prostate cancer testing, treatment, and management of side effects. Resources for veterans include financial assistance, insurance information, and prostate cancer support groups where survivors and caregivers can connect with peers to exchange information and advice.

“As veterans who served ‘in country’ in Vietnam, we were all exposed to the toxic herbicide Agent Orange,” said Bob Wright, a prostate cancer survivor and volunteer leader of the Us TOO prostate cancer support group in Austin, Texas. “Many of us who came home may have developed a very aggressive form of prostate cancer, which is now determined by the Veterans Administration to be ‘service connected’ for disability compensation. We are more likely to have a higher incidence of this disease as well as a more aggressive form of it. Since we’re at greater risk it’s important that we are diagnosed early, evaluated competently, and cared for appropriately, whether it be in the VA or private sector.”

“We’re indebted to our military veterans for the sacrifice they’ve made for this country,” noted Chuck Strand, CEO of Us TOO International. “And we’re pleased to provide this important information to raise awareness and education for Vietnam and Korean War veterans on their higher risk of prostate cancer specific to Agent Orange exposure.”

The web page is made possible, in part, by sponsorship support from Janssen Oncology. Veterans are encouraged to opt-in to receive emails with free information from Us TOO, including monthly newsletters and updates with the latest information on prostate cancer. Opt-in at http://bit.ly/2aToTe3
