UNION CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Seth Sanders, PhD, chief scientist and co-founder of Amber Kinetics, Inc., will participate in a panel discussion on Advancements in Storage Technology at the STUDIO Conference in San Francisco on August 3. Dr. Sanders’ presentation is entitled, “Multi-hour Flywheel Energy Storage Technology for Utility Applications.” Amber Kinetics is the developer of the world’s first commercially ready four-hour flywheel energy storage system.
"The Amber Kinetics energy storage system can support unlimited cycling with zero capacity degradation over a 20+ year service life and is readily deployed in global outdoor settings,” Dr. Sanders said. “Our technology can multi-task to serve provision of capacity, load/peak shifting, frequency regulation, frequency response, and more, all within a single installation.”
Other advantages of the Amber Kinetics energy storage system include safety, sustainability, full recyclability, and cost competitiveness over electrochemical batteries. Dr. Sanders’ Studio Conference presentation will detail the system’s performance features, and outline the core enabling root technologies.
Dr. Sanders began exploring flywheel energy storage systems in the mid-1990s as a professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Department at the University of California-Berkeley (UC Berkeley). He is a leading expert on electrical and electromechanical energy conversion and storage, and heads up the energy research thrust area within the EECS Department at UC Berkeley. As a UC Berkeley faculty member, Dr. Sanders developed a deep background in high speed machinery while building a series of systems including an integrated flywheel system featuring a solid steel rotor, fabricated solely from high strength alloy steel, similar to that used in the present Amber Kinetics rotor designs. At Amber Kinetics, Dr. Sanders is the principle hardware architect and system designer.
Dr. Sanders received bachelor’s degrees in physics and in electrical engineering, and master’s and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from MIT. A complete listing of Dr. Sander’s awards, honors, and publications can be found at: http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Faculty/Homepages/sanders.html

About the STUDIO Conference
The inaugural STUDIO Conference
– Storage Technology and Uses, Deployment Integration and Operations, is
an energy storage event covering the advancement and integration of
technology to support electric service. It is produced in partnership
with the Electric Power Research Institute.
About Amber Kinetics
Headquartered in Union City, CA, Amber
Kinetics was founded in anticipation of the enormous worldwide demand
for competitively priced, safe, environmentally sustainable, multi-hour
energy storage. The company is vertically integrated, manufacturing its
technology and developing energy storage projects using its flywheel
system -- a common model in the PV solar industry.
