Based on product type, the report categorizes the global face make-up market into the following:

  • Foundation
  • Face powder
  • Blush
  • Concealer
  • Bronzer

Global foundation market

The foundation segment recorded a market share of 31.26% in 2015, and became the leading segment for the global face make-up market. Technavio researchers predict this segment to register a steady growth during the forecast period, posting a CAGR of 5.81%.

Foundation aids in covering under-eye circles, dark spots, pores, and blemishes, and gives the skin a uniform finish. Its application also smoothens the texture of skin, easing the layering on of products like blushes and eyeshadows. It is available in forms such as cream, liquid, mousse, and powder.

“bareMinerals' mineral foundation products are among the top in the US and have a leading share in this market. Consumers particularly prefer these products because they do not contain preservatives and fragrances. In 2014, Shiseido launched its first serum foundation, bareSkin. The same year, Bobbi Brown re-launched its iconic Skin Foundation Stick, which met with considerable positive response from customers. The product was updated with a unique transparent base and skin tone-correcting pigment for a natural look,” says one of Technavio’s industry expert, Arushi Thakur, for research on cosmetics and toiletries.

Global face powder market

Consumers use face powder to add brightness to their skin, cover fine lines and dark spots, and improve skin tone. Powder is generally layered onto the foundation base in order to keep the foundation in place and give a final finish. It also helps the foundation last longer and prevents run-off of make-up. Powders are available in loose or pressed form.

“The common ingredients used in face powders are talc, mica, magnesium stearate, kaolin, perfumes, calcium carbonate, and inorganic and organic pigments. Face powders are available in different shades to complement individual skin tones,” adds Arushi.

Global blush market

Blushes are available in forms such as powder, cream, gel, and liquid. Powdered blush delivers a smooth and flawless texture and absorbs excess oil from the skin. Cream blushes are lightweight and easily blend with the skin. These products come in a variety of colors from light shades such as peach, pink, and cream to dark shades such as red, brown, maroon, and purple.

In 2014, Yves Saint Laurent registered significant growth in its make-up segment, driven by the launch of Baby Doll Kiss & Blush, a multifunctional product that can be used to color lips as well as cheeks.

Global concealer market

Concealers are used to hide dark circles, blemishes, freckles, large pores, age spots, and scars by blending the imperfections with the surrounding skin tone. These products are available in liquid, cream, stick, and cream-to-powder forms.

In 2015, Clinique registered significant growth in make-up sales after the launch of its Beyond Perfection Foundation + Concealer. Between 2013 and 2014, the sales of concealers in the UK rose by 6%. In the current market, the demand for concealers has been on the rise, particularly with the "no make-up" trend catching on worldwide.

Global bronzer market

The global bronzer market was valued at USD 2.33 billion in 2015 and will reach USD 2.83 billion by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 3.96%.

Bronzers are used to impart a natural-looking tan to the skin, add dimension to the face, and to shadow or sculpt to highlight or hide specific features of the face. They can also be used as an alternative to blush. These products are available in the form of creams, powders, and liquids and come in matte, solid, or metallic bronze finishes. Cream-based bronzers last a long time and are easy to blend on the skin.
