Fairlawn Breaks Ground on New High Speed Data Service

May 10th Ceremony to celebrate new FairlawnGig product for businesses and residences

FAIRLAWN, Ohio--()--The City of Fairlawn is celebrating the start of construction on the new municipal high speed data service, FairlawnGig, with a groundbreaking ceremony at the Hilton Akron/Fairlawn. The Hilton will be the first business customer for FairlawnGig when the service goes live this summer. The ceremony begins at 10:30 AM on May 10th.

“The Hilton Akron/Fairlawn has been attracting visitors to Fairlawn for decades and has helped Fairlawn become a key destination city for Northeast Ohio,” said Fairlawn Mayor, William J. Roth, Jr. “I am pleased to announce that the hotel will be the first business customer for FairlawnGig and will use our new gigabit service to enhance their operations.”

“A gigabit connection from FairlawnGig will help us upgrade our business,” added Rennick Andreoli, owner of the Akron/Fairlawn Hilton. “We will be able to enhance our guest experience through faster in-room internet access, and our award winning Hilton Honors program will be better than ever. Our guests will also benefit from the FairlawnGig wireless network on the grounds around the hotel.”

FairlawnGig’s municipal broadband utility is different from traditional broadband in several ways. It is delivered over fiber optic lines all the way into the business or residence with the capability to easily deliver speeds of 1,000 Mbps – twenty times faster than the highest speeds available from competing providers. For consumers, gigabit speeds will allow users to stream HD video content with little to no delays and download movies, songs and TV shows in seconds. The ability to stream services simultaneously to multiple devices is possible, allowing families to video chat, stream a movie, play an online game, work from home, and browse the internet without any interruption.

Fujitsu Network Communications, Inc., is FairlawnGig’s design-build, operate and maintain network integrator and project manager. “We congratulate Mayor Roth and Fairlawn civic leaders for their leadership, foresight and out-of-the-box thinking,” said Greg Manganello, Fujitsu Senior Vice President and Head of Services. “Today the community is one step closer building the infrastructure that will enable smart city applications and services. We are honored to make this journey with the City and we’re ready to build the FairlawnGig fiber and wireless network.”

Leigh Sandy, founder and CEO of Extra Mile Fiber added. “We look forward to delighting Fairlawn residents and businesses with gigabit fiber service and high speed wireless all over town. As a result of their forward-thinking approach, Fairlawn has positioned itself well to attract new business and spur economic development.”
